mk5 wiper madness - me or the electrics?

Came out of work today and my rear eiper was wagging continuously like a dog. No matter what position i put the wiper stalk in it didnt stop at all, eventually pulled over and turned the ignition off then back on and all was back to normal.

Was I just being useless not able to turn it off or has anyone heard of wacky electrics in the new golf causing this?

Cheers

Had the same problem yesterday, eventually pulled the fuse after I got fed up.

Went to the dealer and when the stuck the fuse back in it was OK.

Their demonstrator GTI has done the same as well as another customers car.

They say that a service bulletin still has not been raised by VW

OK, thanks. I will mention this to my dealer then since it has obviously happened to others. Can anyone else who has encountered this please also post up so that I can direct the dealer to this thread if neccessary to demonstrate the problem is widespread. I assume they will be able to fix this via software/firmware update as soon as VAG release it, since IIRC this is all software-controlled now and not hardwired as of old?

similar problem with mine - rear wipers come on of their own accord when i start engine. It's an intermittent (no pun intended) problem so no doubt will be hard to fix. dealers are checking it today

hi mate. could you keep us updated in this thread as to what they say? I have mine booked in for saturday but my service tech at the dealership denies having heard about this before and said they have received no 'advanced notice' from VW about a possible tech bulletin/fix on this.

Cheers

My car's booked in for Wednesday (and Thursday frown.gif). The VW Service guy seemed to know all about the rear wiper problem (comes on for me randomly when starting car). He said it was a known fault. I'll keep you posted....

Mine's going in on Wednesday too - let's compare notes!

Haven't had a problem with the passenger window, but in addition to the rear wiper behaving strangely, occasionally the driver's side mirror refuses to fold out to the driving position ( I have the folding mirrot option). Also, last week, I had a warning light telling me that the offside front sidelight bulb has failed. Switched lights on and off - all working properly. Switched off ignition, switched back on again, and the warning light disappeared never to return.

The window switches are pretty delicate.

I have already taken one apart to fix the drivers window not operating on one touch mode. There was a little metal contact within the switch which had moved from its postion so wasn't making contact on he PCB below.

The switch mount is held in by two tiny plastic lugs and if these go the switch won't work.

All I can say is don't lean on the switches !!

had the service tech in mine book the car in, report he ackowledged the problem but there was no known fix from VW tech - still waiting for a call with a fix 1 month after booking it in, 2 months after buying car. Anyone actually had this fixed yet?? Can't believe how long its taking to release a fix for this...

Problem still occurs intermittently, happened today again after an absence of 3 weeks or so.

It's not really a major problem, more annoying than anything, and it is very intermittent. Started doing it again this week after a couple of weeks absence. The worry is the screen getting scratched by a dry wiper blade dragging over it. Going in to the dealer tomorrow, so I'll report on any progress.

Well Alan, I hope you had more success than me. "Can't find a problem sir. Suggest you keep an eye on it". Keep and eye on it - what do they think I've been doing for the last couple of months ? sportifs2.gif

No luck for me either. No fault codes found, and dealer hadn't come across this problem before! The service manager was going to contact VW to see if there was a solution. On a separate note, the dealer wasn't aware of the factory recall noted in another thread.

It's definately something to do with the boot being opened. Mine did it again today after I'd got something out of there.

....Obviously because your boot is so full of cleaning products that they moved and knocked the rear wiper mechanism!!....Sorry Andy but I just couldn't resist it!!

I'll check mine next time it rains which isn't so often in sunny West Dorset smile.gif
