Absolutely incredible day at Goodwood yesterday.

A somewhat inauspicious start saw us taking an hour to get out of town due to severe flooding everywhere, then a very slow drive due to torrential rain.

By the time we got into Dorset though it was brightening up and before long the hood was down.

In fact it was still down when it started raining hard on the M27. Oops! Fortunately at 70mph most of it goes straight over the top!!

It was only a shower though, and we arrived at Goodwood in beautiful hot sunshine.

The place was just sensational. Every interesting car ever made seemed to be there, and most of them being run hard up the hillclimb at some point.

There was total access to the pits where you could get right up close to everything, even such valuable rareties like Ayrton Sennas Lotus F1 car from the '70s, Aston Martins DBR9 GT Le Mans cars, classic Mercedes race cars, the record breaking Pikes Peak Quattro, Fords Formula One engined "Supervan", rare Porsche racecars, current F1 cars, Nigel Mansells championship winning Williams F1 car, Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar car and on and on and on.

All the major manufacturers had stands there with their best cars, not just current but through the ages. Audi for example were showing immaculate classic long and short wheelbase original Ur-Quattros, plus the RS2, RS4, RS6+, TT Sport, A8W12, and DTM racer. Ford had the legendary RS200, the new GT, the original GT40, rally Escort Mexicos, Focus race car, etc etc.

As if that wasn't enough there were passenger rides round an assult course in Bowler Wildcats (high performance racing Land Rovers). I decided I preferred my lunch where it was...

They also decided to run their support truck round the course, that was quite spectacular. grin.gif

Even at the very top of the hill a rally coursewhere they were running rare Group B rally cars from the 80's like the Metro 6R4, plus other historic rally cars like Mk1 Escort Mexicos and a Datsun Z240. Absolutely fantastic!!

Unfortunately that was where the rain finally caught us up, a good 1/2 hour walk from the main section. Fortunately we had coats and umberellas. Unfortunately they were safely stowed in the boot of the car...!

79_Ah_bugger_it_s_raining.sized.jpg

It was clearly in for the rest of the day so after sheltering in the pits for a while we decided to make a break for it. A tractor trailer took us half way down, but we had to walk the rest.

81_Better_take_the_tractor_back_down.sized.jpg

By the time we got back to the bottom we were drenched, and then it stopped raining...

Not to let a little matter like being soaked to the skin stop us. we went and found the supercar enclosure. Everything was there, and I mean everything. The Pagani Zonda, MacLaren Mercedes, the brand new Aston Martin V8 Vantage, new Aston Martin DB9 Volante, Aston Martin Vanquish, Porsche Carrera GT, every curent model Lamborghini, the new Ferrari Superamerica, the Ferrari 612, the new Ferrari F430, a Spyker, the gorgeous one off Morgan Coupe, the ultra rare new Bristol, Jaguars ill fated XJ220, the list went on and on. You name it, it was there and none of it roped off, all available to walk up to and around and peek into.

Then there was a selection of ultra rare cars, like one of only six ever made carbon fibre Bugatti EB110's, a one off classic Aston Martin four door DB6, a one off Ferrari four door saloon (never made into a production car), a rare Maserati engined Citreon SM, just amazing ultra rare priceless cars.

Absolutely the best car enthusiast day out ever.

We didn't leave till about 7pm, the time just flew, and we didn't see it all.

Dinner at the wonderful Drusillas on the way home, and back to base sometime after midnight.

Awesome awesome day!

Just a few of the photos I took above, and that was before the camera battery went flat after about 150 photos, and I had to borrow MMJ's camera. I'll post these here when I get them from MMJ.

Looking forward to next years event already. cool.gif

Only snag was they closed the bars at 6pm.

The Spyker was a phenominal car, I loved that sound. Wasnt really that taken withall the Ferraris and Lambos, as I posted earlier, but I was good to see them blasting about the track.

Highlight of today was watching the DBR9 doing a serious burnout in front of the Jackie Stewart VIP place, that was something else.

And what the hell was in that SuperVan. I went down to the start line later on in the day and that thing was deafening. My daughter's favourite. My sone was more into the Japanese cars, me......I was taking it all in. The missus, well she wanted the Mercedes SL65 AMG taxi car, that was a lovely sounding piece of kit.

So.....we had to stop by the Mercedes tent and have a look....to satisfy her curiosity!

I took a stack of photos, but most of them will only be repeated on here. But got everything on vid as well. Just finished watching the F1 cars again, they were amazing.

Awesome day by the look of it - thanks for posting those pics Ari. 169144-ok.gif

I have to try and get over there next year to visit some friends - so a trip to see the Festival of Speed seems as good an excuse (and time of year) as any.

We see nothing like that down here... frown.gif

Hey Ho!

Thought I would poke my virtual head in and say hello and give my tuppence worth!

By all accounts, it was a cracking day out. The cars were absolutely stunning, there were blue ones, red ones, well all colours really! My point being, I am not really much a car enthusiast - Unlike Ari (who probably even knew the bloody chassis numbers sekret.gif, but didn't wan't to show off!) It was my first experience of hearing some of these engines 'live' which cannot be appreciated via the goggle box. There was a Porche (ask Ari which model!!! confused.gif) in the paddock with the owner/driver? giving a punter the low down on the car, with the engine blissfully purring at tick-over, and within an instant, the engine screamed beautifully a couple of times then instantly returned to its melodic purr. I've never heard responsiveness like it, fan-bloody-tastic! heart.gif

One thing Ari hasn't mentioned (c'mon, don't be shy! blush.gif) is the Castrol Supra, seeing as both of us (and probably many here???) have spent a large portion of there lives (which should have been spent sleeping!) driving the thing,(OK, so not in real life, but Gran Turismo - So much better than real life!) was very exciting to see in the flesh!

Oh, and Rachael, it would appear that ladies HAVE to wear Gucci sunglasses? I think it may be the law! smirk.gif

It's also, quite helpful to have someone knowlegeable around when it comes to spotting celebs, the best I could come up with when we heard the rally commentary was "Isn't that the short fat bloke off Top Gear?" ices_blah.gif

Fantastic day, exciting weather conditions and finished off with a slab of cow at dru -whatsomecallit! notworthy.gif Simple things! pengy.gif

I thought they could have given that Audi AR-8 a clean before they put it on display, it looked a bit out of place next to the Aston DBR-9. Still....it made a great photo nonetheless!!

My kids havent stopped going on about the experience at Goodwood, they LOVED IT!!

Did you get to hear the SPYKER when it was ticking over, then the guy giving it some welly. I found that a hell of a lot more impressive and "responsive" than the Carrera GT. If the Carrera GT on display was the "GT04-CAR" plated silver thing that was on display, I saw it heard it, watched it going up the hill, but it didnt make any inpact on me at all. I was far more impressed with some of the other cars in the Supercar Class.

But having said that, I am only ging by the looks, the sound and the performance on the day...I did notice that some of the drivers of these cars werent exactly giving the crowd a taste of what these cars were capable of. The guy driving the white ford Gt was driving the car like he was driving down the local high street. Didnt pay any attention to the Ferraris or the Lambos, but I was really taken with the Astons and the Masserati Birdcage, the Spyker and some other car that I cannot remember the name of...but began with an "I".

They had a black series 5 BMW going round the track as well but it wasnt an M5. This car had single set of dual pipes and it was too quick for me to see what model it was. Sounded nice too!!

The SPYKER did it for me, a close second was the Zonda.

Yep I know the guy you mean, he was absolutely thrilled to bits with that car and my god did he give the onlookers something to remember. The car has a very "sinister" roar, very distinctive sound. And I didnt realise that the car has a very highly modified full aluminium Audi V8 engine in it, which is tuned to racing spec. Bloody fantastic piece of kit, even if the car isnt that nice to look at!!
