Turbo Whooshing noise!?

hey blokes

last week my 2001 1.9 TDi starting making music. Everytime I accelerate and the turbo kicks in i get a whooshing noise followed by black smoke out the back. I have no loss of power and have great acceleration? any ideas?

I even replaced the intercooler sensor which i thought was the problem because when I disconnected it the smoke and whoosh went away...

All the help you could give would be fantastic.

Cheers

Mike

Do you know where the turbo is? Follow the air intake from the air filter, and it goes into the turbo. Then the other hose which comes off the turbo will go to the intercooler (not the hot one, that's the exhaust), that's one of the turbo pipes. From the intecooler back to the inlet manifold, that's the other turbo pipe. These run the boosted air down to the intercooler, and back up to the inlet. and if these split, you lose boost. Check every inch of them, and squeeze them to see if they're ok. Chances are you'll find a split in one of them. 169144-ok.gif

You'll have to excuse my stupidity... but the turbo is bolted to the side of the engine and is "shiney" and as far as i can make out the turbo pipes are the largest under the bonnet? one is "ribbed" and made of rubber (pardon the expression) and the other one is a lot tougher and made out of plastic coated nylon? or something like that? correct?

Well I sepnt all day today looking for a split hose... and didn't find one I've pulled every hose out one by one thats connected to the turbo and can't find a problem. The only thing I didn't take apart was the air filter assembly. however I did notice a lot of thin oil mix in the top hose (out from the turbo then from the elbow shaped hose down to the right hand side where the hose runs off somewhere into the bodywork.

Any ideas?

It sounds like you didn't inspect all the hoses, if one disappeared off somewhere. From the airfilter to the turbo, isn't a pressure hose, the airflow there is into the turbo so it's pre boost. Where this hose enters the turbo and the other one exits is where it becomes boost pipework, so concentrate on looking from thereon. The one with a light coating of oil is the first hose. Follow this one and inspect it everywhere it goes. If it goes into the inner wing, then find it on the other side, and carry on looking. This hose will run to the intercooler (which looks like a small radiator) and should be hose clipped onto one side of the intercooler. The other hose coming off the intercooler is also boost pipework and you have to follow this hose and inspect it all the way back tho where it connects onto the inlet manifold. It's not uncommon for these connections to blow off sometimes and if this has happenes, you can simply reconnect it. But from your description, it sounds like a split hose.

Hi

Well it is in mine, very wet around a couple of joints. It runs ok but has 136k now.

Does this oil around joints mean the turbo is on its way out? My 9o bhp Passat had this at 100k and is still going at 260k without any turbo change.
