Hyperboost DV on A3T

As some will know I won a compition on one of the other forums and the prize for which was the Stratmosphere Hyperboost valve supplied by AmD.

Anyway I received the DV last week, and was skeptical about any gains being obtained over the standard Bosch version, as probably are most of you, so thought I would share my experience.

The first thing that struck me is that there was no literature contained within the box for the Hyperboost DV, nothing about the installation, not that I felt I needed it, but something would of been nice, WHY? Well it's all very well having the good intentions to fit it, but without replacement hose clips you would find yourself in a world of crap. The standard clamps for the vacuum (Top) hose and the dump/return hose cannot be reused easily, so need to be replaced with standard clips, but how do you know what size you need until you've removed the other ones.... well, you just guess. Stratmosphere have installation instructions for the Forge, but no details on the size of the replacement clamps required, as they supply new clamps with the DV, and waiting until you've removed the other DV to go get some clamps is not really ideal........ as you can't use the car! So please take note Amd/Stratmosphere.

My initial impression of the DV that the cooling fins and the alu body of the DV which allows it to run cooler than it's plastic predecessor, probably make it more efficient/effective over longer periods of driving.

Just like a little kid (Or pervert, depending on how you look at it) the first thing I had to do was stick my finger in it's holes, and why did I do this, well I wanted to see how the spring tension on the valve compared to the original unit. The Hyperboost is certainly harder to push the valve off of its seat, which would mean maintaining a higher boost pressure within the system, which is desirable. I also noticed that the piston/valve is very uniform in it’s opening and closing and has much more of a snap to its functioning unlike the Bosch unit, which plops more than snaps and can open unevenly occasionally. Based on it’s construction and feel I would say that it would run for far longer and more reliably than the original equipment, which is a reasonable assumption when comparing a diaphragm to a piston.

Anyway, I stole some hose clamps from my company production line and got to work on installing the Hyperboost DV, 15 minutes later and the job was done and looking the business, with only the vacuum/feed line to the valve being a bit tight, due to the increased height of the new DV.

Testing! Well, around the town I live in is the ‘Buitenring’ (Outside ring) which consists of a slowly curving duel carriage road over about 15Km and with around 10 sets of traffic lights along it giving short and long sprint sections, so it’s a bit of a racing ground, and the perfect place for testing a newly installed DV. Many traffic light grand prix’s later and I can say that performance wise I didn’t notice anything, but gear changes were definitely smoother in my opinion, due to the boost pressure being maintained at a higher level, keeping the turbo speed higher during gear shifting.

So overall I am chuffed , not only ‘cos it was free but the fact that there are gains which can be seen on the DV and felt in practice. Whether I would actually go out of my way to purchase on of these DV's I'm not sure, but probably after a few mods I might consider it for smoother shifting.
