silentandy
Driving style for sure makes a difference. With me it depends on my mood or even destination as well. Today was my one day in the office, I didn't want to rush there and be in the wrong frame of mind so just cruised down the M6 & A14 staying around 80 and managed 35.3mpg in the process. lagrian
RedRobin, Totally agree after I wrote that I thought also concidering prices that I should try some other fuel just to compare performance and economy. I filled up on Sainsbury's 95 Ron standard unleaded and straight away noticed a performance drop, I didn't notice any notable change in MPG , having said that as my driving stlyes is quiet erratic its not really good for comparrison. After 100 miles on 95 RON I have decided to never fill up my GTi on it again, she just didn't like the tipple, its worth the extra cost IMO. silentandy
I ran my last car mostly on Optimax as well so I'm well used to the cost by now. I don't think the MPG is that much different on any of the fuels, but performance is definately better on Optimax. The only plus is I have a whole lot of points on my Shell Optimax points card! calmac
I had the same problem with 95RON from Esso. It won't be happening again. The cost is not too bad anyway, particularly if it means you can use the car to its full potential
RedRobin
More mpg info: 32.7 using DSG D-mode on 185m of A-roads. 28.7 using DSG D-mode on 175m of M'ways. (includes M25 traffic jam) Mostly cruising 80-90mph with the odd bit of 110mph for getting past some bunched cars. Acceleration from 70 to 100 is perfect! Fast and safe. She simply does everything you ask and does so very smoooothly.
dmg11eng
Looks like the running in went out the window then................
aswall
Most of that could be done within reasonable revs though. Running in is BS anyway, never have done and never will. Mine has done 2800 miles now and has averaged 29.2 mpg
RedRobin
....Exactly - Because I have been running in D-mode the revs have been kept low. Certainly it was my plan not to exceed 100 and to cruise around 80 but unfortunately, as you well know from conditions, you can get bunched up with lots of others travelling at that speed....I prefer to either hang back or safely move on if there is any choice at all. Also I don't want to lose my licence! As all of us who have our GTIs know only too well, the car responds well with power available throughout the range....She gains speed very easily. Anyway, any 'excesses' have not involved any sustained high revs and I have slowed down as soon as possible. I did put my foot down a bit (but not to the floor) when overtaking two cars and an artic truck with trailer up a straight stretch of Dorset lane coming home....I was very very pleased with how quickly and safely I was enabled to move on. We all love to do that don't we.
WhiteHArtMart
Have to say economy is better than I expected. Ony my 45 min test drive yesterday - the demo car (4500 miles on clock) averaged 31.8 mpg. Mixture of driving in D, S and lots of redline action in manual mode!! Ok it doesn't get near the average of 49.6 mpg in my A3 (14500 miles) but I do a lot of constant 50 - 60 mph driving - wouldn't be surpised to see 35 mpg +
dazdot
After 5000 miles i have averaged 28.2 mpg. Not great i admit, but i didnt buy the car for its fuel economy. I have just been reading about Gti mpg over on uk-mkivs.net, seems to be a few spurious claims, but the best (with tongue in cheek) was Aswall with this; [ QUOTE ] I have done 3000 miles in mine so far and only used 2 litres of fuel at an excellent 5543 mpg, mind you when I don't drive as carefully it drops down to about 347mpg. Or if I've not come out with enough bulls**t that day it's about 30mpg [/ QUOTE ] Some how i dont think he believed or even cared what some people were claiming. Well said Aswall. ppage
I have to say, I'm quite dissapointed with the fuel consumption of my GTI. By comparison, I also drive a BMW E46 330ci Sport Coupe and that manages a very respectable 32 mpg on average - and I really don't hang around in it, in fact I regularily accelerate at light speed pace but then tend to back off when I get to a nice crusing speed. If I do the same with the GTI, I'm lucky to get 25-28 mpg on the same run. What makes it worse is that I use GPS in both cars and can confirm that whilst the BMW speedo/odometer is dead accurate, the GTI over reads by a hefty 10% - so really I'm only getting roughly a low 22-26 mpg!!!!! I can get the mpg to show 34-38 mpg if I'm really (and I mean realy) careful, but it's so slow and gentle that I'd be better off cycling to work or buying a *Nissan Micra. Cheers, Buzz. * I recently overtook a Nissan Micra on my push bike on Worthing Seafront... not sure the 80 yr old driver even noticed!
aswall
Hey I can better that, on a blat the other night I managed to average 20.1 mpg On the whole though, my mpg seems to have settled down to just under 30mpg which I'm fairly happy with, the 330 and GTI have very similar performance (I'm well used to various E46 models) and 32 mpg for the BM is pretty good. I averaged around 24-27 on any of the 6 cyl 3 series cars I drove and frequently got below 20 mpg in extreme driving. How many miles have you done, you might get a slightly better average as the engine beds in further
ppage
Aswall - It's now done 3400 miles and I have noticed a small improvement since new, so as you correctly say, it may get better in future. But what really gets me is that the GTI over reads by 10% - so not only does it make you think you are getting quicker performance/better fuel economy than you really are (therefore nearer to VW's consuption figures), but when you come to sell your car, people think you've done more mileage than you really have - think about that, when you come to sell in 3-4 years, you have 70k on the clock, wheras really you've only done 63k!!!! To me that says a lot less Pounds in your Pants toward your next motor. Does anyone know if you can have the speedo/odometer recalibrated to correct it? - Or can the VW dealer do it??? Cheers, Buzz. ppage
Forgot to mention, with a 10% over read: Those service bills come round quicker as the variable servicing intervals are calcualted incorrectly. You slow down way too much for Gatso's! Astra VXR owners just get to laugh even more. AND, Nissan Micra drivers overtake you whilst you think you are doing the national speed limit - Followed by me on my push bike!!!! Buzz
mu71rd
hadn't thought about the mileage aspect of the 10%+ reading on the speedometer. I think the innaccuracy is a good idea on a speedo, but I would have thought it verging on illegal to have it read distance wrong for a car. Are you sure that the speedo isn't deliberately miscalibrated, to make us drive more safely? might have to test that soon with my GPS...
dmg11eng
My GPS shows the Speedo to be over read by 2 MPH at the most at any given speed, up to the national legal limit, couldn't possibly comment on speedo accuracy above 70 mph
RedRobin
....Showing my ignorance here: What is GPS? And how do I access it?
mikemod
I find the GTI not to bad compared with my TomTom, 60 on the TomTom is 62 on the Speedo. I had a Laguna on hire last week and took the TomTom with me. 60 on the TomTom was 65 on the speedo.
RedRobin
Okay, so I'm thinking that GPS must be an aftermarket extra such as a TomTom or Road Angel....But how do you know that such a device is more accurate than the car's speedo?
simkna
GPS devices are generally accurate to 0.1 mph at a constant speed. The Datron VBox (GPS device used by most serious car performance testers) is renowned for it's accuracy at all speeds / levels of acceleration. Car speedos are typically 5mph high at motorway speeds. SMB
only sure way to check mpg is to brime the tank and measure over set distance, is the odometer overreadigin for sure, or just the needle on the dial?
RedRobin
Thanks simkna....Datron are clearly the professionals in the market. If car speedos are typically +5mph at M'way speeds (70mph?) then it does seem to potentially throw up a technicality in law that Mister Plod could not argue with...."Begging your pardon m'lord, but I can prove that I was driving at 69mph and not at 74 as alleged."....Hmmm....My example would hardly work as you are unlikely to get pulled for doing 75 in a 70 limit. But, says he rambling on, might it be more critical for "I was driving at under and not over 100mph as alleged m'lord." which carries an instant disqually. Anyway, it's nearly time for me to shutup and take my GTI out for a drive....At under 70mph of course!
RedRobin
I'm not wishing to pour cold water on anyone, but isn't this getting a bit too academic. It's certainly interesting but it's all relative as I don't think any of us bought our GTI for its mpg capability. I'm not trying to close this thread (I couldn't even if I wanted to) but, personally, if I've got the dosh in my pocket I don't mind buying petrol for the pleasure that driving a Mk5 GTI gives me. Otherwise I might have bought a Mk5 TDI (DSG) as Captain Sensible was screaming at me to do before I locked him in the garden shed!
silentandy
Agreed Red, I did not buy the car to look at MPG figures all day. Although to be honest it was a factor that you could get such good performance with relatively good MPG. I'm averaging around the same as my previous car which was a 2.0 Megane coupe, so I'm more than happy considering the huge difference in performance! That said, my current ave has gone down to aroud 28mpg lately.
