From Sky News:

Putting the wrong type of fuel into a car is bad enough - but putting it into giant yacht is about to cost Roman Abramovich anything up to £7m.

The Russian billionaire is said to have been "disappointed" to hear his 377ft yacht, The Pelorus, was pumped to the brim with the wrong fuel.

And it is understandable when a single tank-full for the vessel costs £120,000, The Sunday Telegraph has reported.

The fuel tank will have to be drained and cleaned before being refilled - a process likely to cost "at least £1m, potentially as much as £7m".

Simon Borg Cordona, Mr Abramovich's agent in Malta, where the "disaster" happened, told the Telegraph: "The engineers discovered that the fuel that had been used was 'incompatible'.

"I cannot confirm what happened exactly, we still don't know.

"Definitely Mr Abramovich would have been inconvenienced and the boat's departure was delayed because of the fuel supply problem."

The Chelsea FC owner's holiday was put on hold while the problem was sorted out.

The yacht is longer than the pitch at Stamford Bridge and is complete with a helipad, indoor pool, gym and stateroom.

Mr Abramovich is said to be worth an estimated £7.5bn.

I'd heard about this. I'm curious to know what was put in it. I'm no expert on super-yachts of this level, but I'd assumed they all ran on diesel.

I know a chap who had a Princess yacht, and was halfway through refuelling when he noticed he'd stuck the diesel nozzle into the fresh water filler, not fuel filler! blush.gif

They had to have the water tank out of the boat and professionally cleaned, and even then there was from that moment on always a feint taste of diesel to the water apparently...

Much worse, about 10 years ago a 30ft petrol engined boat was being winterised (ie put to bed for the winter, all systems drained down etc), and part of the process was to drain the fresh water tank. So the monkey doing the job cheerfully plugged his Aquavac into the fresh water filler and switched on. Pity he'd plugged it into the petrol filler by mistake!!! EEK2.GIF

I believe he escaped unharmed, but the boat was a write off! smashfreakB.gif

Petrol into diesel filler and vice versa not unheard of either, although unlikely anyone would mistake a Megayacht for being petrol powered! grin.gif
