Cooper S wheels

Hi all you Mini guys wink.gif

We are proly going to get a Cooper S, but I am just not that keen on any of the wheels.

I would want at least 17" but maybe 18", and am after some recomendations of aftermarket wheels availiable.

Can you get any with a bit of rim showing, ie. the face of the wheel being a bit setback from the rim/tyre, or would they stick out too much?

Thanks for any help/advice 169144-ok.gif Peter

On any BMW Mini 18" will take away the effectivness of the handling and its chuckability, as is true on most cars that don't come with 18's as standard. The ride which is already very firm will get even firmer so it would all be dependant, on how hard you like, plus seats you have and tyre choice also make a difference to the harshness of the ride.

Hold on sonny, I didn't say that tongue.gif

A mini on 17" or 18" will look fab, and be ok in the bends, it all depends on what you can put up with. Like the classic mini, they both handle better on smaller wheels, the old mini is better on 10's than the 13's that Rover started fitting, and the same will be true for the new Mini's they will handle better on fat 16" than 17" or 18".

However, if you can handle the slightly harsher ride on 17" or 18" and the slightly less responsive handling you can have just about as much fun, with it looking as bad boy as you like.

Final poiunt, always go with what you can afford. JCW kit might be great, but if you can afford something aftermarket it might be as great without leaving you skint!

I have already decided against any J.C.W. kit, and would be happy with 17" wheels if any of the official ones took my fancy.

With my old S3, I would (should) have gone for aftermarket 19" rather than the optional 18" RSTT's had I not liked the Audi wheels, so this is making me think long and hard about it this time.

16" stock wheels are just a no no NONO3.GIF IMO on the mini, which made me think that I would have to get 18". But the main thing I wish to seek is a wheel with a bit of an offset (face of wheel set back from face of rim, with rim showing) and this type of wheel might look better in a smaller size?

Thanks again for your help with this, would love to see a pic of a Mini with the BBS LM 198's or similar on if you know of one? 169144-ok.gif Have a good weekend beerchug.gif or ECLIPSe.gif or sekret.gif

  • 2 weeks later...

Just took the r32 depreciation hit, and picked up a cooper s works.....

Had similar thoughts about the wheels but chose to get the engine job and go for the traditional wheels.

My mate ordered exactly the same spec at the same time, except he spent 29.5k on the whole works job, and the JCW wheels/suspension impact the real road performance/chuck factor....

In the country lanes mine feels more confident, with the 18inch wheels and sports plus suspension rather than the full on JCW suspension and skinny tyres/large wheels.

... now all the full on JCW lot will flame me, but i don't care 'cos I will back up claims the JCW MCS is real world quicker than the R32 ever was with the exception of 100mph+ A road bends in the damp.....

ps make sure you upgrade the ICE, even the harmon kardon makes a massive difference, and gets your trousers shaking like no VW system i've seen

piccies....

have fun....

Cooper S Black

chilli pack

works engine kit

Black headlining

harman kardon upgrade and cd boost

silver viper stripes

3 yr tlc

approx 21.7k

but the new factory fit JCW kit gives you the brakes and half the aeorkit for 400quid less.... the engine kit is well worth selling a kidney for, it lifts the cooper s to another level.....
