Pedalhead
Hi @. Probably ordering a new GTi shortly, & was just wondering if anyone knows whether it's possible to get a tow bar for a Mk5 GTi? My local dealer seems to think you have to cut a bloomin great hole in the rear bumper, but that seems a bit unlikely to me. It's purely to be used for carrying a bike rack...I currently use roof bars for the bikes but don't want to have to do that on my new car, and a rear hook & strap type rack apparently doesn't work due to the rear spoiler. Cheers for any help.
GTiMK5
I am buying a boot mounted carrier next week from Halfords which apparently fits MK V's so will let you know how I get on. As all MK v's have a spoiler as standard I am assuming it should fit the GTI as the spoiler is not too different in size from the standard ones. I wouldnt want to fit a towbar on for sure. Pedalhead
Thanks mate, I'd be very interested to hear how you get on with it.
silentandy
I think there was a post elsewhere that said the only way to fit a tow bar on the GTI was to cut the lower valance. So aside from looking daft, it would be an expensive way of carrying bikes!
Melchior
The 'Official' detachable VW towbar can be seen here. It doesn't look like the valance has been cut to my eyes. Also bike carriers here.
gribs
See attachment (if it works) of a pic I took of a towbar mounted bike rack when I was down in Afan last month. I took the pic as it was a 3dr steel grey and I've been pondering the best way of carrying a bike myself. Not sure what the law's like with these as the reg plate is quite obstructed? For the time being I'll be taking the wheels off putting the bike in the boot. Will probably go for a roof mounted system eventually.
silentandy
That pic makes it look like it's been cut?
gribs
Yeah I would have thought so. Can't say i looked that close at the time but it's got to bolt into something somewhere. I've no idea if this was a dealer fitted option or 3rd party though.

[/ QUOTE ] I would say it would be very easy to do and not too expensive to replace.
