RedRobin
Technically, in the UK it's breaking the law to change any of the reg plate spacing but lots of people do it. I have left mine as VW05 RED but whereas VW 05 RED might be more obvious I decided to underplay it and just let the standard layout speak for itself. It's a bit less "Look at me! Aren't I clever." Also, if I get pulled by Mr.Plod I want to be as legal as possible to reduce any hassle. I saw M3 00 TOP on a M3 BMW yesterday - Nice but just beginning to get a bit ostentatious imo though M300 TOP wouldn't be as cool - Lovely motor though! Being a big black Beemer it just got away with the plate. A Tornado Red Mk5 GTI gets lots of looks anyway! Going out soon to test for 'drone' on my new Millteks
RedRobin
"DRONE": The term 'drone' as defined by my Mac's Widget Dictionary is stated as: "A low continuous humming sound: He nodded off to the drone of the car engine". I don't think there's much chance of nodding off in a GTI - Not if you value your life. If you can hear the engine at all then yes, you will hear any engine sound as continuous according to how continually you drive in the same gear at around the same revs. So, technically my Milltek Non-resonated quads 'drone'. However, in practice I do not find this to be any problem whatsoever because the sound level or volume is unobtrusive and I actually WANT to hear my engine running most of the time. Any drone is obviously most common on motorways but, so far, the exhaust sound can be easily masked by playing music in the car and that's only if you are driving continuously in a higher rev band. If you think about it, you can't really have both a dead quiet car in typical M'way conditions and hear the revs/gearshifts at all other times. My preference is very definitely for engine sounds - Very much as a driving aid as I have previously written but also for my enjoyment. Hey that V12 Ferrari is far too loud!! - No it is not!!! Straight-Sixes, V8s, I love them all - Don't you? So, in conclusion, the Non-resonated Millteks only technically "drone".....Gloriously!! Elegantly!! And not like a bike-box on a boy-racing Chav car. It's a quality sound even when continuous. Continuous would only be the problem if it was both continuous and too loud in such a car as the GTI. In Lambos and Ferraris it's simply normal. Natural sleep patterns are not rudely interrupted by having Millteks and neither is nodding off induced (Will Smith's "Nod Ya Head" again). A GTI with Non-res Millteks isn't even unsociable. I imagine that the Resonated version can only be a very subtle tad quieter or otherwise it would be no louder than the standard exhaust....The sound level difference between Non-res and standard is that small! I would be surprised if anyone who chooses a car like the GTI would find this Milltek Non-resonated system to be a problem. If anyone wants it LOUDER then check the Hi-Flow Turbo Back, speak to Jason (jaysGTI) if/when he gets his, or don't get Millteks. My 'test' involved an 80+ mile run driving at steady speeds and revs on dual carriageway (A303) with all windows and roof closed but varying the revs held steady for significant periods: 2,500rpm@70mph in 6th / 3,000rpm@??mph in 6th / ditto in 5th. Nothing in 6th gear was a problem at all....Obviously the engine is at its quietest then. You can get 'drone' if you keep the revs continuously high in any gear but 'drone' is not the negative it's made out to be when using Milltek Non-resonated Catbacks on the Mk5 GTI. Just as a final sweetener: When idling (letting the turbo wind down) after a 'fun' drive, the idling Millteks sound like a big wild cat purring - Tiger or Leopard, not your local moggy! ---- ----millteks---- ----

RedRobin
Hi Jay....I'm very confident you'll be happy with Non-res and I'm very interested to hear your thoughts on the Hi-Flow Turbo Back Millteks. Are you having Quads as well? What extra bhp is expected? (Sorry if you have already posted this info).
jason_s
robin hello.... yes most definatly the quads, especially after seeing your pics. they really finish the car off nicely and make it look even at the back if you know what i mean. milltek quoted for insurance purposes 15-20 bhp increase for the whole system. should be on a par with those other 2 cheap cars
RedRobin
Looking good I'm looking forward to knowing if the Hi-Flow system is louder than my normal Non-res system. Did Milltek say anything? Btw I hope you mentioning my name to Andy at Awesome got you a deal.
jason_s
said it would be a little louder. with a deeper growl
RedRobin
With an even deeper growl!! I'm getting jealous already! It's an awfully difficult sound to describe and not what you expect from a 4-cylinder engine. Amount of bhp and 'loudness' is just right for me methinks. jason_s
each to their own robin this is the first time in a long time ive had the money to get what i want (well almost as id love a porche gt (in my dreams)) and now im going to have her just the way i want her. will almost definatly get an amd or mtm retune in maybe 6 mths or so, then the exhaust will really come into its own. RedRobin
After about 300 miles, Millteks really beginning to sound good and also carboning up inside the pipe ends Non-res is perfect sound level for me - Very sweet at high revs and at very low revs....Leopard purrs and growls. Am I getting too carried away folks? Truly a helpful driving aid too....Transforms the whole GTI driving experience. Okay! I can hear you shouting "Boy-racer!!" jason_s
boy racer !!! never red the pipe and slippers give it away have had a change of mind, am going for the non res now...
RedRobin
Special quad pipe and red slippers!! I'm surprised about your change of mind - Any particular reason? Not my enthusiasm for the non-res I hope....The sound is subtle but all there. I have been having such fun driving recently that I haven't played any in-car music and I reckon the music will hide the sound of my Milltek Non-res quite a bit. What I'm trying to say is that you might prefer a louder sound than me. The other factor - important imo - is performance and ability of the standard car to handle that performance without further mods. Exhaust+Remap+Suspension+Wheels&Tyres+etc all adds up. Best to try standard car before taking such a plunge - Especially as can't change front wheel drive! Or test drive AmD's car.
AlanH
Wait until you get to around 1,000 miles on the Millteks - mine have been through childhood and puberty, and now their voice has well and truly broken
jason_s
red, change of mind due to what you and others have said about non res. sounds like it will be just right for me. i was afraid they would be too boy racery, but i can rest assured that the reviews you and others have given are accurate. understand what you say about car being able to handle performance. have spoken to milltek and they say the car handles it fine. a little bit of scrabbling in 1st gear from what they say... in other gears the car handles the power very well, but then im not planning on racing people off the lights. it will give much better overtaking and give a more exhilarating drive i think. when i go to awsome to have my millteks fitted im definatly going to drive their mk5. they have the millteks, apr remap (not as smooth as MTM or AMD, so im not going for theirs) and they havekoni fsd shocks which they say are wicked (read their website info) will only get the shocks if and when i get the remap. RedRobin
Oooooh!!!!! Alan! - I think I love you! Thanks for telling me that!! Now I can't wait! Let's see....2 days @ 350m a day should do it....But can I manage to drive 700m tomorrow? I might need that Sweet Black Road Angel a day early. ---- ----millteks---- ----
AlanH
Difficult to give a precise answer, but probably maybe around a third louder. It's not so much the increase in volume that works for me, but the fact that the exhaust note has more "growl" when dropping to third gear and accelerating. The last thing I wanted was an exhaust that sounds "boy-racer" - far too old for that. When I went for a ride in Milltek's track car with the res system, I was surprised how quiet it was, hence the decision to go for the non res cat back. Believe me, go for the non res and you won't be disappointed. And you won't upset the neighbours either.
RedRobin
Jay - I can guarantee that NO-ONE can legitimately accuse Milltek Non-res Catbacks as 'boy-racerish'. The sound is obviously different from but at a very similar level/loudness to a standard BMW M3 - Defo NOT boy-racerish like a bike-box hoover boom and clatter raucous crap! The Millteks match the quality of the GTI. Alan and others with Non-res - Am I telling it like it is? I have refrained from trying to record the sound because unless recorded very professionally it could mislead you and others. The sort of recording I do is via a mixer to a computer and not outdoors 'in the field'. The important thing is how the Millteks sound to you INSIDE the car. AlanH
You're absolutely right Red, and sound is such a subjective thing anyway. For me, the Milltek sounds great in the car, and , I've been told, sound pretty good from outside too. But not that "echoing off the walls, hear you coming from half a mile away" scream. They're refined, but have loads of character.
RedRobin
Alan. No need to scream our imminent arrival to all and sundry and some in particular mentioning no names. "Refined" but with "loads of character" describes the sound pretty well. Keeps reminding me of a Leopard purring though (which I have heard on a number of occasions). jason_s
im sure i will love them as much as you two cant wait to hear them with the H-Flow cat and downpipe and report back to you. dont have long to wait for the car now, is awaiting shipping, i really hope it goes on this week as sleep deprivation is getting to me big time. have you heard of the koni fsd shocks. awsome think their brilliant, as they give a more comfortable ride when driving normally but on "pushing it on B roads" they tighten up supurble. am looking forward to trying their car out. have you heard of the
