RedRobin
Jay....My 14yo just came in to say nighty night and read your post over my shoulder.....She says she can relate to your fiancee and thinks she should start her own forum for 'GTI suffering wives and girlfriends'. The added benefit of your GTI grin is that your gf might think she's the one making you grin! May you keep grinning either way and howsoever caused!! jason_s
it really shows how just one or two test drives can make you feel about a car. after driving the lotus elise 111R i would never have thought the gti would come close, but after driving both the gti put the smile on my face and has kept it there ever since. RedRobin
Went over to my stealer today for Road Angel hardwire and at beginning of journey was in high street behind a silver Mk5 Golf but noticed 'GTDI' badge on righthand side. Er? 05 plate so it couldn't be the new GT. Overtook after leaving town but stayed in D-mode because fuel showing only 5m so it wasn't a blast past. Later on the same GTDI arrived at the stealer's and so I went up and asked him. No, his car was a 2.0TDI and he had made up the badge by taking the G out of another GOLF badge he had bought....Gee! What's in this guy's head? Anyway, the point of this story is that when he learnt I was the red GTI driver he said how good it sounded going past....He thought that 4 pipes looked 'boy-racer' but they didn't sound 'boy-racer'! Who cares? I'm the one driving a real GTI and not a pretend GTDI!! So, Millteks also sound good to others outside.
jason_s
think my dealer is useless, i asked him about a hard wire for my tom tom and he said they couldnt do it. might have to find another dealer t get it done
RedRobin
Of course he can do it! Problem could be if you are not buying the Tom Tom from him. Thinking further: He probably can't sell TomTom because it's an aftermarket competitor to the factory SatNav option. I usually check possible routes on my computer before a journey and literally 9 times out of 10 the navigation system gives me routes I don't want and never my preferred route. So much for SatNav systems! I bought my Road Angel from my VW dealer as they are all the same price everywhere and so he is hardwiring it next week. Running it on a curly sprung wire meanwhile. Bonkers
Anyone here installed a resonated cat-back system with twin pipes from Milltek? How does it sound and feel? Cheers..
RedRobin
Bonkers - I think you'll find someone earlier in this thread who has answered your question. I can only tell you my impressions of the Non-resonated version and I've probably mentioned them in most threads!! On the subject of Millteks.... I met up half way with a close friend from London for lunch today. Any excuse for each of us to have a blast on 'The Queen's Highway'. As you can see from the pic, his latest ride is a Porsche Carrera S (937?) - Superb! The colour is a dark blackcurrant and the photo doesn't do it justice. Great alloys and detailing both inside and out. Note that the Carrera's quads are cut at an angle - Pity the Millteks aren't like that but I'm not unhappy. Just an excuse to share a piccy:
Simonl
Love your car red, but can't get on with the aerial... sorry dude! Sensors look good BTW!
RedRobin
Aerial was born out of necessity - Up 'n Over door of my tiny rented garage fouled the stock aerial. Wow!! I don't believe it! - Someone who actually likes my black sensors!! You are the first one apart from myself - The others are saying Yuk! (very politely!). Yeah, but you are a designer (and Mac man) so you understand form and function relationships. I think they relieve all the red at the back. RedRobin
[ QUOTE ] Wait until you get to around 1,000 miles on the Millteks - mine have been through childhood and puberty, and now their voice has well and truly broken [/ QUOTE ] ....Hi Alan - I'm just about 40 miles short of my first 1,000 with the Millteks and have noticed them getting subtley but progressively louder! They are just right now but as you are a good few miles further on, are yours still getting louder?! It's so good to hear the engine even if it's only a 4-pot and it's not raucous like a friend's Carrera S but deep and sporty when revving and sounds very quiet when idling. jason_s
hello robin, am getting mine fitted on thursday....cant wait. i am supprised how loud the standard exhaust is, ive now done 750 miles and they sound great when warmed up. ive got a funny feeling they have a hole in them though as there alot louder than i remember on the test drive. the "pops" they give when in manual are just awsome, they really make you proud to be a gti owner. when coming back from derby yesterday stuck in traffic on M1 i was amazed at how many heads were turning to look at my golf
AlanH
I too found that the stock exhaust grew louder over time. I think that my Milltek has now reached full maturity - a deep growl when accelerating or under load, but very quiet when idling or motorway cruising. RedRobin
Hi Jay, I bet you can't wait! It's very subjective and so will always be difficult to discuss and accurately assess but I'm surprised you find the standard exhausts loud. I only found them loud enough when the revs were up. It would be extremely unusual if you have a hole in your exhausts. I'm told that as the engine 'loosens up' performance and exhaust sound will change for the better. Expected thresholds are 8-10,000 and again at 30-40,000 miles. So you'll easily manage that first threshold next week won't you Jay! Robin
RedRobin
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR JAY.... I have just been speaking to Milltek and took the opportunity to ask if they considered their Turbo-back Hi-Flow to be louder than their Non-Res Catback and they were immediate in their response that they strongly recommend the Resonated box be fitted with Turbo-backs. Obviously you as the customer has the final say but I thought you should know this if you didn't already. You might want to phone them. Also, as both Alan and myself are reporting, the sound of Millteks will 'mature' as they are 'run in' but should not continue getting louder and louder. RedRobin
Hi Alan, my quads aren't exactly quiet when M'way cruising but they're neither obtrusive nor a problem. They do exactly what I want from them: Audibly respond to my right foot and gearshifts
jason_s
thanks for that robbin, will have to phone them straight away tomorrow morning and get the lowdown. im sure when i asked them before they said it wouldnt be that much louder. hope awsome have the box for thursday if i change my mind. jason_s
phoned them and they thougth you were talking about the tdi not the gti (spoke to john i think) he was of the opinion that its totally down to individuality. he thought the non res cat back was a little loud but his companion there thought it was fine. he did offer me a drive in theres on the way up on thursday. a little out of the way so i may not take up the offer, but really very nice of him to offer. a very knoledgable man. will test drive the one at awsome, i think there going to fit the h flow part tomorrow so i can try there full system beofre i make up my mind. RedRobin
....Sounds ideal. John at Milltek is very knowledgeable - It was a lady I spoke to and I guess GTI could sound like TDI but I don't see the difference. No matter - You are being looked after
GTiMK5
Red, I am trying to make the decision between res and non res. I have not heard either although AMD have a recording on their website of a res which sounds good to be honest. What I dont want is to get a non res and it sounds boy racerish/halfords etc or fit a res and there is hardly any difference. I have read through all your posts and you almost convince me to go for non res. However, I have a question for you. This might sound a stupid question but I am trying to get a feel for how loud the sound is, there is a Subaru Impreza WRX STi near me and I can hear him coming from a mile off, how would you say the non res would compare to this, I know the sound wont be the same as an Impreza is a fairly distinctive sound, but for volume etc, is it on a similar level, less or more?
