Multi-region DVDs on laptop ?

Can you get round the DVD region protection on a laptop or is Bill Gates too devious for that ? I haven't played one in my new machine yet but I recall it gives you 5 goes before locking the system to one region only; can this be bypassed ?

Also, if you get it to play region 1, does a laptop handle NTSC ?

Firmware change was dead easy for my Powerbook - now I can watch whatever I want...

Of course, after doing this I discovered VideoLan's VLC media player - which just reads the files off the discs, and have probably one of the best MPEG codecs going - so it ended up being an interesting exercise in changing fimware for me...

My advice - before flashing any firmware -go to http://www.videolan.org/ and grab the VLC software for your O/S. Then - all you need to do it set your O/S to NOT automatically play DVDs when they are inserted in the drive. Reset the preference to VLC. A much neater solution if it works - and no hassles later with hardware/firmware being "non standard".

To view - select "open disc"... It'll do VCD and SVCDs too which most DVD software doesn't do...
