RedRobin
Hi Jennifer - I shall refrain from making naughty comments about knocking while idling! How long have you had the car? - In other words, has the knocking noise always been there? I anyway think that you should be concerned because it's not something anyone else has reported. I wouldn't be "worried" because it's something your VW dealer can sort out under warranty. Just a thought....It's not knocking after you switch off the ignition is it? You can get that if you don't use high enough octane petrol. My advice is to run 98RON anyway. A friend of mine was having all sorts of problems with an Audi S4 Twin Turbo which all got solved when he stopped his wife putting in standard fuel. Can you give us more details about your problem? Jennifer
I have had the car about 6 weeks, since 02/09/05. Done about 1200 miles so far. I don't notice the knocking if I have the stereo on loud! I will see if it makes more knocking noises later when I drive home. I tend to notice it more in the mornings as I get stuck in traffic. I am sure the Bods at the garage would love to to have a go at fixing it, any excuse for them to take it out for a spin! If it continues I will definatley take it in. Otherwise it seems to behaving its self, and I am enjoying the GTi experience so far. Ps only put optimax in it. not doing all that well on the fuel consumption, think it must be the way I drive as my Boyfriend is more economical than I am! Red, May be in your neck of the woods at the weekend, visiting the folks in Seaton, Devon.
RedRobin
Hi Jennifer - I remember now - You're the lady who was asking for our suggestions on what music to play to celebrate your GTI's arrival. Stereo on loud ain't gonna help your diagnosis of knocking! - Is it James Brown trying to get out of your stereo? I'm an Optimax drinker too Your comment about your boyfriend's driving being more economical is very funny It's usually the comment you hear from guys here about their wives/girlfriends' driving! I'm not an expert anyway but it's almost impossible to hazard any guesses without hearing your knocking. It's best that you actually concentrate on listening for the problem (no music) and carefully noting all the circumstances. What does your boyfriend think about the knocking? If you 'guys' want to meet up with GTIs at weekend around Seaton area I'm around all weekend except Saturday night and Sunday late afternoon and evening. PM me if so. Good Luck anyway
MK5001
is it kind of "BLOW OF VALVE" noise as your RIGHT foot off ?? i got the same too, i dont think is a problem, i kind of enjoy it ...
RedRobin
....That's a normal sound sometimes when you lift off or change down. How much you hear will depend on revs or how hard the engine is working and also your exhaust. I hear a lot on my Milltek exhausts - The reason why I got them . dazdot
Dont forget that there is a dealer recall on the Gti. This involves insulating the master cylinder to decrease the noise that comes from it, this recall solved mine. Ask your dealer about it as they will only carry out this work if you either ask for it, or if your car is in for a service as it is not classed as a serious issue. Hope this helps. Need more info to take to my dealer, they are a bunch of retards and unless I am able to quote a reference number of something at them will just deny all knowledge of this! dazdot
Factory recall 30C3 (fit insulation to the clutch master cylinder). That is how it is worded on my invoice.
RedRobin
Does '30C3' apply to DSG as well? And did the noise match Jennifer's description of what she is getting? Cheers

Snoopy
Is this knocking a kind of THUMP THUMP Thump noise? If so it happens on most cat fitted cars as its too do with the recirculating canister valve it starts a min or so after the cars been at idle its to do with emissions. Its normal it all depends on the make/model of car on how loud it is some you cannot hear it some like Polos you can really hear it.
