Bora 1.9TDI losing power at 85mph !!!

Hi

I'm currently having a problem with loss of power in my bora 1.9TDi (110). I was on the motorway yesterday and could only get up to 85mph. This was with the pedal down fully, around town the car seems fine, so I don't believe its the turbo. So it only seems noticeable at high speeds. I took it into the garage and they put it on the computer, but no codes came up for a fault. Thinking back now I am sure I got a brief burning smell when I got onto the motorway, but this disappeared after a couple of minutes. I have heard mentioned something to do with a sensor ??? Has anyone else had this problem or familiar with this fault confused.gif?

Thanks

sorry in not replying sooner, I have still not got this issue sorted! I've had the car in the garage twice now. After the first time it went in, he told me he had made some adjustments and to see how it goes - so I took it on the motorway straight away although it did seem quicker around the streets it still wouldn't go any faster on the motorway again sticking around 83mph. Due to work and getting time off to I didn't get the car back in the garage until last week, same thing again see how it goes now, I asked him had he changed the MAF sensor - he said its been changed, but to be truthful it looks to me like the original one - same dirt marks on it, although the clip has been moved. So I'm now at the stage where I will just buy a new MAF sensor and fit it myself.

When I asked him what he had done, he started saying he has adjusted the turbo and other things. Am I wrong in thinking that changing the MAF sensor was a straight forward job of just taking the old one off and putting on the new part? or will adjustments need to be made elsewhere? if this is the case I will just do it myself

The fiancee Bora 115 had this problem, where itlost power and slowed up hillson motorways.

Turned out to be dry joints somewhere.....a mechanic found them and sorted it. 5 hrs work for £115! Bargain.

I then drove the car, and it is fine!

When I originally picked it up the turbo kick in was a bit fierce, it is now much gentler - but just as effective.

ok, i finally had the MAF sensor replaced and i've noticed a big improvement in speed but its still not as quick as it use to be. I took it for a run on the motorway and it did manage to get past the 80mph with ease. I've now taken it to another garage and the mechanic reckons its running about 85% efficient, he thinks I might have an air leak on the turbo somewhere. It just doesn't seem to have that pull when you first put your foot down, so i will be putting it in the garage in a couple of weeks for the morning so he can check all the air pipes on the turbo. He suggested the part that could be the cause of the fault and said i would be looking at around £160 for the part.

thanks for that lobbytdi,

sounds like a possible explanation for my fault. I dont know what to believe when i go into a garage anymore, it seems pretty hard to find a mechanic who is not trying to make a nice little earner out of you. at the moment the car is bearable, so will post an update as soon as i get it checked out again.

I am really running out of finding a genuine mechanic i can trust! could my lack of power be due to something as simple as getting the airfilter replaced? when both mechanics have test driven the car, they both made the exact same comment which must be familiar in the mechanics vocabulary "its as flat as a witches tit!"

I finally found a genuine mechanic who is a neighbour of my brother-in-law, connected the laptop up to the bora and straight away got an error code for the MAF Meter. He checked the engine and said the one in there now had never been changed and advised me to go to VW and get a new one. Went down on monday and picked one up for £70 - it took about 10 minutes to fit and now the car is back to full power. I should have gone with what i was advised months ago, as this has taken nearly 5 months to get sorted! The garage should have changed this the first time i told them it was the Maf - total waste of my time and money!!

He told me he had replaced the MAF meter, looking closer at the unit - it looks like he didnt replace the whole unit, just the sensor that sits in the middle of the unit. He charged me £75 pound and then said its running now at about 85% efficent!! he then said he would need to check the hoses for any splits, but he thought the part that was probably causing the fault was something else, when i asked how much for this particular part, he quoted £160! total rubbish!
