yiman
My A3 Tdi has 800 miles on the clock and since I've had it I've been irritated by a weird whistling noise which sounds like it's coming from the back end, passenger side. It doesn't sound anything untoward at all, it's just like a low whistle - like an owl's hoot, which builds up and dies down at a certain point in the throttle range. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Can't face the hassle at the moment of returning to dealer for something relatively minor. Any advice or infio appreciated. Wallachie
Maybe it's your turbo!! Just kidding! Sounds like wind noise to me, check your door seals etc. Other than that I wouldn't really know.
yiman
Think it's deffo not wind noise as the generation of the noise is strictly throttle controlled and happens at all speeds.
dgl
Well I think Mills first answer could be correct. Do you think the noise coincides with the turbo kicking in? 3000 revs I think??
Rustynuts
A3 TDI turbo will be coming onto song at about 1500 - 1700 rpm.
yiman
Will check - could be highly likely.
runflat
sounds exactly like the turbo whistle. Tends to be hard to pin down exactly where noises are coming from in cars, but I would bet this is what it is.
yiman
The sound happens at between 1500 and 2100 rpm, depending on gear. Is turbo-whistle just what turbos do or is it a sign of something awry?
Rustynuts
Oh, what a lovely sound, as long as it's coming from the turbine and not the bearings. If you drive alongside a wall with the window down, you can make it whistle by playing with the throttle (even though diesels don't have a throttle). It's just something that turbos do, as it's the vanes of the turbine spinning through the air.
DukeDesmo
Could it be one of these? http://www.sillyjokes.co.uk/p-jokes/surprise/exhaust-whistle.html

Guest slittley
I have exactly the same car (2.0TDI) and have had mine from new in September. I also get a whistling noise which is difficult to determine where it comes from (it appears to be coming from inside the cabin although this is unlikely). It's a low-pitched sound and sounds like someone is blowing over the top of a bottle. The car has been back to the dealership who thought that it was a resonance in the air intake path (I agree with this diagnosis as it appears to be related to engine speed/throttle position/engine load). The "fix" apparently recommended by Audi was to replace the turbo impeller. This was supposedly carried out by the dealership and they told me that the noise had been eliminated. However, on driving the car away from the dealership after having the noise "fixed", it quickly became apparent that it was still there. I haven't taken the car back again, partly because I plan on changing the car for a petrol turbo version early next year but had I been planning on keeping the it for some time, I would have insisted on the fault being rectified. While the noise isn't very loud, it is present often enough to become irritating and you should expect nothing less than close to perfection on a brand new car. Please keep us posted on your progress with the problem. Good luck! Steve
Guest slittley
Correction to the above: Audi identified the noise problem as originating from the turbo impeller. The fix was to "replace the turbocharger" which the dealer claimed to have carried out (but given the fact that it made zero difference, I'm not 100% convinced they did this). yiman
Cheers Steve this sounds like exactly the same thing. I've got the car for four years so looks like a visit to the dealer to get this irritation fixed.
