lagrian
Could someone help me out. I spec'd the the heated washer jets when ordering my GTi (part of the winter pack), however we have only just hit the weather that makes me be able to test them. Does anyone know how to turn on these or if they are always on. I would look in the manual but I only have half of one. Thanks
R32North
Should come on when the 'heated' systems are on, ie switch on heated rear screen and it should activate the mirrors and jets as well!

silentandy
Not sure about that because the heated mirrors on mine have to be switched on separately by the mirror control
RedRobin
Mine by separate switch like Andy too.
lagrian
So you guys are saying the mirror heated switch does it rather than heated window switch , right ? To be honest I have been driving around with the heated mirrors on since I bought the car as I always forget to turn them off again, so I thought the window heating button was defrosting the mirrors and jets too but may not be. Should pay more attention really. I'll test tomorrow if this chilly weather continues and report back. Side question: Does driving around with the electrical functions (mirror heating, heated seats, window heating etc) turned on effect perfomance in any way or are there any down sides to doing so ? RedRobin
To answer your "side" quezzie....They won't effect performance but some may effect your fuel consumption (aircon for example). I had/have my heated mirrors on all the time too. In fact I can't see the setting from my driving position.
lagrian
Cheers for clearing that one up Red. The thing I can't work out is that the laws of physics say that there must be a loss of energy somewhere if you are using such functions, no ? I don't tend to use the mirror switch much because in my last MkIV golf after 2 weeks of ownership 'it', not I, came off in my hand after much fiddling, I think its exactly the same switch. RedRobin
Doubtless there will be a use/loss of energy but I think it would be battery related and not 'performance' as in 0-60 etc. Perhaps your Mk4 was a 'Friday-built' car!
lagrian
Or the previous owner liked twiddling the nob allot ! Yes see what you are saying, there would be additional drain on the battery, but does this mean the alternator would have to work harder to recharge the battery and if this is the case as the alternator is connected to the drive shaft would there be a perfomance decrease however slight it maybe. Very much like the aircon if running it puts extra restriction on the drive shaft.
RedRobin
I don't actually know the detailed answers to these quezzies. I do know that I've yet to find myself in a situation where I think: "Oh poo! I need to switch off a few things cos I'm losing neddies!" Mind you, I've now got an extra 20 neddies to feed. Heated Washer Jets is an extra I wish had ordered but as she's garaged overnight and it's always a few degrees warmer in the South West, I'm hoping it won't matter. R32North
I stand corrected....... but it goes to prove a point that VW are stingey gits! My MKII had heated jets which came on with the rear screen. My A3 1.8T was the same and inc'd heated mirrors and my R32 has the lots including headlamp washers. The MKV is obviously different and you have to pay for these things now, which is a total scam as you have power going to the mirrors so they shuold be heated by default. And as for the jets it can be done one for two ways, heat the water or warm the metal jets so it defrosts! VW must have a new Scottish boss - tight fisted, penny pinching gits!! RedRobin
....Me too! (I've got Scottish blood on my father's side of the family). Am very happy with my GTI but, of course, curious about the new R32. I'll test drive it soon anyway.
silentandy
I can't say for sure as it might just be the way I've been driving lately but I do seem to lose out on mpg when I've got both the the heated seats on.
RedRobin
....that agrees with what I once read. Not especially heated seats but that there is a fuel/energy trade-off. My point is though that engine and neddies 'performance' is not effected.
mu71rd
having things like heated seats and aircon on makes the revs go up - you can see this when idling - turn everything like that off and (certainly on my car) the idle drops a hundred or two
lagrian
Thanks for the help you have provided Red and others I may try in the electrical forum, see if I get any luck there, I suppose I just want to know incase I get in a position where I need every last drop of power, after opening the passenger door and throwing out my passenger. Plus I seem to have heated seats, mirrors, jets, ICE, dimming mirrors running all the time so I am curiuos to their downsides , so it could be MPG effected ? I'm curious if it does because it certainly doesn't feel as if acceleration or speed is influenced.
R32North
If you're hooting about, excited and 'aving fun in yor car you shouldn't need the heated seats on anyway as you'll be all 'hot' from the driving experience! Plus you use heated seats when its bl00dy cold outside so, as the air is colder you use more fuel, so MPGs are always going to be less in situation which require heated seats to be on!
