mainy
Cheers Martin I've seen that site before but to be honest they look more like the STD 17s finish so not identical to OEM 18s Quite a good price though for someone thats not bothered about an exact match
allanon_1980
i wonder can you get them polished
nhs
Nope, they're aleady painted. Real fakes.....
encee
Having lately tried various avenues, before I bought my 18`s (genuine ones), I looked into this, and, as far as I`m aware, there is not yet anyone producing exact copies of the Monza II`s. Any copies around are finished just like the standard 17`s, but made larger (obviously), to 18.
nhs
Yup, and when you have seen the polished metal finish on the 18"s, the painted version seems more than a little sad!
RedRobin
I'm afraid that I can't see why a GTI Mk5 owner would have any interest in a replica/imitation BBS Monza wheel whether 17" or 18". Does this mean we are about to start seeing non-GTI Golfs with Monza-style wheels? - Shame imo but some say that imitation is a form of high flattery. GTiMK5
Red, There are people putting the GTI front grill, wheels, steering wheel, gear stick etc on normal Golfs, you only have to have a look on certain other websites. It is just the same as the MK4, there are quite a few look alike R32's about. Just the way it is I am afraid.
RedRobin
I think the term "Wannabe" applies to such people. To me it's a degree of chav but I would also state that I'm not anti chavs as many TSNers are....It's just another form of 'taste' and def not my taste. Didn't we all do things which made us look like a major pratt when we were younger? I know I did and some wag like petsy or LeMan is going to now quip that I still do! Hope you are well, Cheers. encee
Yes Red, I would agree with what MkVGTI says, as I`m currently trying to sell my standard 17`s on ebay, and have had people enquiring to say that they can get copies of the new R32 wheels for not much more ! When I say I looked into replicas, I didn`t actually consider getting them as I wanted originals, and ONLY originals, but you inevitably come across the copies when you are scouring the internet. As was said by another poster, the finish on them is nothing like the Monza II`s, and, TBH, I don`t think a copier is going to be able to offer them for much less than the originals anyway, if they do replicate them exactly at some point, because of the cost involved. RedRobin
Another consideration might be the fact that BBS, who manufacture both the original 17 & 18s, have introduced a new hollow technology with their Monza alloy wheel and I bet that they have taken out strong patents and I doubt if the replicas utilise the same technology. I stand to be corrected but I think this is yet another case of a market demand for something that merely looks good but doesn't deliver anything else. nhs
Just for information, although the wheels are called "Monza" in the sales brochure, if you actually want to order a spare, they aren't called Monza at all, but are called Detroit and Denver Similar to the paint, if you want a respray/touch up of the Diamond Black (pearl), what the parts dept will supply you with is called Magic Black (pearl) . Something to do with the marketing department I believe !!! Talk about crazy. I suppose the same with changing the names of the cars in different markets too - I see the Jetta is also coming back to the UK

[/ QUOTE ] Nice one Red, wasn`t aware of that fact. As you say then, there`s obviously more to them than just the aesthetic aspect. (You`re going to boll*ck me now Red, because I`ve not researched my product properly before I bought it ! LOL. )
RedRobin
nhs - Good to learn even more . Which are "Detroit" and which are "Denver"? encee - No, I won't be bollocking anyone....It's entirely up to them. Each to their own and live and let live etc. I thought you bought genuine ones anyway .

nhs
The Denver's are the 17 inch The Detroits are the 18 inch If you search Fleabay with "Denver GTI" you will several sets of 17s on offer in Germany at the moment. Can't see any 18s. Mind you, if you'd decided to buy new alloys for your new vehicle, you're hardly likely to want to pay extra for the VW wheel upgrade! Rather more likely to sell the standard 17s
nhs
Mind you, if BBS have done new technology for the GTI wheels, it makes these "replica" wheels poor value
JonoNZ
In NZ they're actually marketed as Detroit and Denver, and the the pearl effect paint is called Black Magic. Seems to be different depending on the country.
RedRobin
BBS Air Inside Technology: web page "Kraftfahrzeugtechnik" - don't you just love the German language! I really don't know if the replica wheels are also the same technology but I would be very surprised if they are. The weight comparisons might be a clue. TwoSheds
Red, Never heard of new hollow technology. Makes the car even more special the more you read about whats gone into its development.
RedRobin
This Mk5 GTI really is a special car....Not the fastest or best in the world of course but VW have really tried very hard to get it right and it's worth every penny over its rivals imo. It's full of very clever stuff. Why the feck don't the dealer salesmen learn all this on their courses???!! Heck, the GTI is rather more than just a pretty and faster version of the Mk5 Golf! It rocks!! I drove 372 miles yesterday, didn't feel tired, and almost felt disappointed that the journey was over, and half of it was at night! nhs
Hmmm, hollow wheels 4kg-8kg less..... yup, I must go on that diet again Blinded by science otherwise on the BBS site - but very interesting - thanks for finding it

Nice find mate, and where the hell did you research this from ?
