Right my car is causing me a few headaches at the moment but this bugs me. I have at the moment got the engine man light on but have no ill effects from the car. the last time this happened it was because the car was running lean. no like i said there are no ill effects the car runs fine so what could it be. its a mk4 golf gti 1.8T 150bhp (2000).

any hints welcome 169144-ok.gif

Dude, my money would be on a faultly Coolant Sensor.

Seems a stupid question but have you had the car parked on an incline / slope?

Run it into a VW dealer and get them to check it.

no just on my gravel drive. light came on when we got to the top of a hill though. so it possible.

a daft question but how would the car being parked on an incline effect this?

I really don't know how it would affect it but mine had this fault and when I took it to the dealer they said that sometimes this can cause the problem of the engine management light coming on. I guess the sensor is a bit naff !

Collease, I had exactly the same problem with my engine management light coming on, i also have a Mk IV 1.8T, the dealer initially told me it was the cooling system that was at fault and it would need replacing, at a cost of £300, while they were at it the would need to replace the cam belt aswell apparently. I am not very techinical when it comes to cars but I figured that if my cooling system wasnt working my car would be over heating, so i took it to a local garage and he said it was the ECP sensor, which he replaced and the car ran fine for abit, but the light came back on, i did loads of research on these forums and found it could be the MAF sensor, my car started loosing power while driving and the turbo wouldnt cut in. I had the car serviced and told the dealer i thought it was the MAF sensor and i wanted them to look into it. Sure enough, 7 months after I first took the car to them they acknowledged the fact the sensor needed replacing, so I paid £112 for a new sensor and the car hes been fine since. I hope this give's you some idea as to what the problem may be, no doubt the guru's on these boards will be able to help you further. Good luck.

just come back from the stealer and been told the problem is the S+F F LAMBDA probe. cost of part 90.78 cost to fit 64.50 then i also need my throttle cleaning cost of part (can) 6.50 cost to do 45.15 so bill going to be up around 243.14 for the lot. seems very pricy but hey its a stealer. asked if i could drive it for a few weeks till i get the money together and was told it not a good idea its likely to stop working altogether. is this true.

Do you have a copy of the diagnostic read out? what are the fault codes?

I doubt very much it will stop workin all together, but thats not to say you wont risk doing some form of damage! ...again...the job of the dealer is to inform you that it needs replacing etc etc bla bla yda yda...but they are just after your money!

Might I actually suggest that you try the MAF sensor? (does the car actually drive ok besdies the light comming on?)

personally I would try to source a local techy/indpendant garage.

car drives fine and only had the maf changed about a month ago. didnt get the print out i forgot to ask but there is no way in hell i will be taking it to the stealers to be fixed. there are a few blokes at my work that used to work for VW so trying to get them to fit the part and do the clean and reset on the computers at work. should mean price comes down to pints not cash. 169144-ok.gif will let you know what happens. 169144-ok.gif
