jcoles7
Hi All, Has anyone made an MP3 CD and used it in the RCD 500 ? If so how did you do it ?? I have tried and it won't work just comes up error after it tries to load. Best Regards Jason Coles
Simonl
tried this in my CDC with Nav, no joy
stevie_d
I'm sure I read somewhere that someone had gotten it working? Or was that an aftermarket changer? If not then damn, I was hoping to play my mp3 discs.
Simonl
I think that was a dealer pretending to use an MP3 disk when really it was a CDR burnt music CD. I've tried, and failed
mb
Have you tried burning it as a "flat" CD - ie all the songs in the root of teh CD - no folders, play lists etc. ? I don't have one to test here but I remeber a friends aftermarket MP3 player could only cope with flat CDs
stevie_d
that's an idea. My changer can not cope with folders!
frazervisser
Ive burnt CD's through iTunes and is worked fine when i plug the disk into the head unit and don't use the changer in the arm. Thsi disks are just songs ie no playlists etc
Simonl
Are these MP3 music CD's Visser, or just straight forward CDR burnt music CD's?
frazervisser
To be honest im not sure what the encoding is, But i select the songs i want from my iTunes libary drag them into a playlist and burn them using the burn feature in the top right hand side of iTunes. These have all worked fine in the GTi but in a mates Pug 206 they do not play. Sorry im not more help
stevie_d
the burn feature in itunes re-encodes (or is it decodes???) back to cd format. They will no longer be in mp3, you can only get 20 odd tracks on your cd right?
Simonl
you can select it to burn either an MP3 CD or Music CD in 'preferences'
stevie_d
[ QUOTE ] you can select it to burn either an MP3 CD or Music CD in 'preferences' [/ QUOTE ] You can? &$%$!!!! I spent about four hours the other day creating the PERFECT playlist for my car...when I went to burn it I thought you could only burn "proper" cds, so I had to ditch a load of tracks I have of course deleted the playlist so I can't get it back Guess I have another evening of making my ultimate playlist
Feckless
I have just tried this and found that I cannot get MP3's to play at all. I have tried, buring the music file into the root of the CD (ie. no folders.) Also I have tried the head unit CD player and the multi-changer. It doesn't matter how you cut it but the RCD500 wont play MP3's. Interestingly though it does recognise that a data disk has been inserted by displaying a "CD-ROM" logo on the display. RedRobin
Sorry that what I am about to say isn't constructive, but reading this post simply confirms that it's far better to swop the OEM Head Unit and fit an aftermarket one. I get no problems playing any of the discs I burn from iTunes, Toast, whatever their format or mixture plus better quality audio delivery. iPods no problem either. Currently the VW factory option is simply not up to speed imo.
jcoles7
Hi All, I have tried again with both a "finalised" cd and also a non finalised cd and it does not seem to work.... It's in the manual so it must work. Somehow Cheers Jason

[/ QUOTE ] I have the RCD 300 and it's shockingly poor.In fact I went to a stealers at the weekend and had a listen in two other Golfs because I suspected mine was faulty, but they were the same. Very bad for a car this price and I must admit it's really affecting my enjoyment of my new GTI. I'm wondering is it the head unit or speakers or both that are bad ? Regarding the MP3 I could have swowrn I read somewhere in a brochure etc that it would play MP3,but the manual says definitely no and will display CD ROM if one is inserted. RedRobin
RCD300 is def poor if you like to enjoy music. That's why I ordered the cheaper RCD300 knowing I would change it to a high-end Pioneer combined SatNav & Audio Head Unit....All for the same price as the VW OEM SatNav option. But without going as far as I have done, you can get a decent aftermarket Head Unit and also speakers if you want.
stevie_d
Are the upgraded VW options any better? I've got the sat nav coming but like my music...

jcoles7
Hi all, Anyone with VW inside info help on this one ?? Also for REF my RCD500 manual says it does support MP3 CD's god knows how though as I can not get it to work. Cheers Jason
AlanH
[ QUOTE ] I'm wondering is it the head unit or speakers or both that are bad ? [/ QUOTE ] It's the head unit that lets it down IMO. After swapping the stock unit for an Alpine the sound quality improved 100%. I would say swap the head unit first before spending any money on a speaker upgrade. CrowdedHouse
Alan - any chance of the model number as a starting point for some research.
scillyisles
I have the DVD Sat Nav with 6 CD changer in mine and I have to say that the sound quality is very good and compares favourably with BOSE and Harman Kardon in other cars. Going aftermarket involves loosing functionality in the FIS and other areas and inevitably looks less integrated although you do gain the ability to play MP3 CDs. Connection of an IPOD is possible but in order to display the track names/playlist e.t.c. I'd have to connect it to the CD changer connection - I'm currently working out how to connect an IPOD to the AUX connector on the headunit and giving me IPOD charging capabilties. Lookw like I need a Dietz connector to connect to the rear of the Sat Nav unit and a Pocket dock with USB and line out to the IPOD.
