I checked my oil the other day and the colour drained from my face when I saw how black it was. If my Golf had had oil that colour, it would have seized up! So hastily phoned a couple of garage for an oil change (I'm on 12k miles, first service is at 30k(!!!!)) and was told it's perfectly normal for a diesel engine's oil to go black, even a month after an oil change.
