Snoopy
[ QUOTE ] Honesty wise, the car was new when delivered in Germany/Holland/Denmark/Belgium etc. That is where delivery took place of the new vehicle - hence the PDI being stated to be in that country. The car WAS new when delivered in Germany - this was its first delivery. If it has a second delivery in the UK to you, can that still really be "the first delivery"? [/ QUOTE ] Talking in general about cars uk cars can be sitting at the compounds for months too, Most cars when imported by say VWuk goto a few big componds round the country then to the dealers, Sometimes the cars are PDI'd at these componds and can sit there for months. But they don't stamp the book or if they do dealers often just issue a new book with there stamp in!. Infact my last SEAT model was actually a June shipped car (confirmed by me with the chassis number) but was not sold to me till December when the dealer ordered it from the compond. So it had been sitting in England for 6 months but still registed as new. [ QUOTE ] With regard to the DVLA, they merely put what the registering dealer in the UK tells them onto the V5. So all the importers tell the DVLA it is new. They are hardly going to say, "well we bought this car in {whatever country} and then transported it here ourselves and here the car it is in the UK. Can it be second hand please?" [/ QUOTE ] If you look at the DVLA site about car imports you will find certain documents have to be shown to prove this. This is not the case with franchise dealers as they use different forms but importers and supermarkets are a different case. [ QUOTE ] Try taking your imported GTI to a VW dealership and part exchanging it for an R32 next week. You'll find an offer well below a UK delivered car. But that's ok, because it cost you two to three grand less. [/ QUOTE ] There has been a couple of cases at least of people on this site doing more or less this. iirc one guy part'exed his manual GTI for a GTI DSG and got a price equal too if not better than a UK official cars price. In theory what you say is what happens but so far does not seem to be happening. [ QUOTE ] Try selling either an import or a VW UK delivered car in 3 years and the price difference will be narrowed to close to nil.... [/ QUOTE ] True and anyone selling before imho has more money then sence. [ QUOTE ] The issue is, did MotorDepot really say this was a UK car, when it has already been sold in Germany, and technically is a German delivered car, you are the second owner, albeit the first owner registered in the UK. If you look at the terms and conditions of sale to you, it says ownership remains with Motorprovider/Motordepot etc until fully paid for. That is, they own the car, and then they sell it to you. [/ QUOTE ] But you could say that of any official uk car too. The car is sold to VWuk by the Volkswagen group. VWuk is run as a company, an import company if you will, its a distributor. Infact you could take it a step further and say the car is owned by the uk dealer before you get it.

Melchior
If you want a UK dealer car with a saving, I got my car through dsgauto.com and can recommend them. According to their website, the current saving is over £600 for a UK Dealer supplied car, which could be useful if your local dealer won't budge on discounts. They primarily offer finance deals, which at the time of my purchase far surpassed anything VAG finance could offer. Having said this I bought my car off them outright, although this isn't openly advertised on their website.

Vman
Was in VW Dane at Wrexham and the guy in there told me that they had imported about 5 GTI's in several colours from Germany instead of going through VW UK which to me seemed very strange. He said that they all come with the 3 year warranty and were a few thousand cheaper!! I also asked him about the model year changes which I think happen in June and he did not know much about them. I did ask about the power hike for the GTI as I said how can VW market the Jetta as the "Sport 200" which has the same engine as the Golf GTI, I said surely this be little the GTI and he argreed. So we will just have to wait and see.
nhs
Very interesting! A VW dealership doing direct imports of non-UK colours I suppose if you had a Racing Green GTI or in fact probably any green GTI and it got nicked, at least you'd have a good chance that it would get spotted Wonder if it's worth giving them a ring - the VW Website says Contact: Eddie Thomas at Dane Motor Company (Wrexham) Limited on 01978 340600, however they aren't listing any new cars or GTIs of any colour
Vman
They had a met black, 5dr, unregistered on there forecourt for £20495, not sure what options it had fitted.

[/ QUOTE ] But there was always an equivelent JETTA to the Golf GTI, Mk1 Jetta GLI 1.6 same as the Mk1 Golf GTI 1.6 Mk2 Jetta 1,8 GTI 8V or 16V same as Golf 1.8 GTI 8V or 16V Mk3 Vento 2.0 same engine as the Golf GTI 2.0 8V (granted no 16V but was a Vento VR6) Mk4 Bora 2.0 same engine as the golf GTI 2.0 So there has always been an saloon version to the Golf GTI. In later models Vento and Bora it was a more comfort modellike an SE rather than an out and out GTI type of the early cars. The Jetta sport200 also goes to show how over priced the GTI is if they can kit that with the same engine and other stuff for that price. Thats prob why when i see the JETTA advert in the UK i don't see it as VW intended, people thinking you have a posh expensive car so they put there prices up, I see it as an advert were people look at you in your VW then put there prices up as they see you as a soft touch as you paid over the top just for a volkswagen you will pay over the top for anything. nhs
Snoopy is right. Also the current Passat with the same engine as the GTI but more spec also shows the GTI to be overpriced
RedRobin
Overpriced by comparison the GTI might be, but the bottom line is that if this VeeDub floats your boat and you have the money available, then it's not important. Just my opinion.

twopipes
GTI is a brand, Everybodys knows and expects to pay more for a product with history and a cult following otherwise buy the Skoda Vrs Top chariot if it foats boat.
RedRobin
Talking of Skodas, I spent Saturday at friends who have a house high up on Exmoor and a pig of a place to drive to (beyond SatNav known roads!). He has just bought a Skoda Octavia Estate 4WD 1.9 TDI and it's extremely good value for money. Considering where they live, he would have been quite justified in getting a big 4x4 off-roader. My friend loves my GTI but he's got the right car for his lifestyle.
