basket1case
Im just dithering over weather or not to part ex my 02 150 bhp 1.8t golf (full leather recaros heated, wood trim, six stack in dash) for an 02 V5 golf, 10k less mileage cruise control,no leather, single cd. the VW dealer only wants £500 to do the deal, and my current gti is going to need 4 new boots + mot + tax next month which is going to cost me about £500 anyway. Took the v5 out for an extended test drive, and its a totally different drive to my turbo, bags of torque and it revs a lot easier, sounds good too, all this plus i get a decent vw approved warranty. On paper looks like a good deal, but am I going to regret off loading my gti in 3 months, from a reliability point of view my car has already eaten 1 air mass meter and some vacumn tubing and the 1.8 reputation isnt that good anyway, but is it any more reliable than the V5? Basicaly, I need some opinions!!
shao_khan
If you want to change test drive a 130 or 150 TDi, but I wouldnt consider the V5 as I dont like the engine much. Remap the 1.8T and it will be heaps faster and more fun that the v5 in most situations, plus yours sound like a spec that will be hard to replace. Rayza
My friend owns a V5 which has done approx 120,000 miles now and it hs been very reliable. I like the sound of the engine and has decent power (but I have not driven a 1.8T so can not really compare). Only problem is that it can be a little thirsty. Also I think it maybe a higher insurance group (not 100% sure) and they seem to be harder to sell than the 1.8t.
basket1case
just checked my insurance (egg), no diference (hurrah), but thats one thing I am a bit concerned about is the resale, My current gti is mucho desirable cos of all the toys and i'm guessing that the V5 is so much of wolf in sheeps clothing that no one knows about them... why is life so bl00dy complicated
Rayza
Choices choices. But they are more exclusive. I say go have another test drive, and try to have one as long as you can. Also have a look at what these cars are worth, I am sure theres plenty of internet sites to value cars.
Simonl
keep the 1.8T, if the dealer will swap for £500, how much will yours be up on the forecourt for. Not being funny, but he obviously thinks yours is a more desirable, saleable car to begin with. He'll be the one laughing, not you!
basket1case
I can see what you mean, its just I think the 1.8 is bit on the fragile side and it seems to develop new rattles and knocks everyday ! (probably me being paranoid now!) plus the V5 sounds pretty fruity when you give it some beans unlike the gti which sounds more like a sewing machine! Simonl
you'll soon get used to the sound, and tire of the mpg!
Snoopy
What version of the V5 is this one? Is it the 10V or 20V a relative of mine has had both in the SEAT and found the 20V far better on fuel and better overall than the 10V.
basket1case
its the 20v , hurrah!!!
kabskabs
I had a v5 2.3 20v for 7 months while waiting for my GTI. It was a very nice car, but in comparison to the 2.0 MKIV(Non-Turbo) very front heavy and not as playful. The V5 as I'm sure you noticed is a very solid car being naturally aspirated. I would stick with the 1.8T, I would ask him to give you £500 and see what happens
Stabb
This is not based on having driven either car, but you seem to be nervous about the 1.8T costing you money down the line which is understandable as the car gets older. Personally I would get the V5 but tell the dealer to skip the £500 and do a straight swap. Push him and see what he says! Change is the only constant and change is good! collease
iv got a 1.8T and had trouble with it(MAF,LAMBDA probe, Running lean, Turbo pipes) but now it runs like a dream and iv done 120k as well. i love the handling compared to the V5 wich always seemed more laboured but i guess thats because its heavyer. id stay with the 1.8T for a while longer and see how it pans out. If it starts costing you lots to maintain get rid.
basket1case
Lately its developed a bit of a knock sometimes when you startup , just for a couple of seconds and occasionaly when you switch off it runs on for a second with a couple of dull knocks,it can go a few days without doing it; thinking back to my old school days ,a knock is usualy a very bad thing to be hearing,so part of my logic is off load it before it costs me anymore and get a car with a years warranty on it. I'm not 100% on modern engine management, but is a knocking indicative of impending doom?or is it a matter of changing a couple of sensors ? but then even a diagnostic plus labour and parts is going to cost me a ton minimum , add on to that I need 4 new tyres (16's), tax, mot which is going to need rear discs/pads + front pads , so i'm looking at a £500 minimum bill anyway. Is it me or does it sound like i'm trying to convince myself!! Is my logic twisted or am I making sense?
Simonl
How much is the V5 up for anyway?
basket1case
its a 2001 on a Y with 50k on the clock, its up for 8k, so hes giving me 7.5k for mine (an 02 with 60k mileage), im guessing if I was to stick mine in autotrader i'd get about 8- 8.5k what with the leather recaros & cd stacker.
