1.8t versus V5

Im just dithering over weather or not to part ex my 02 150 bhp 1.8t golf (full leather recaros heated, wood trim, six stack in dash) for an 02 V5 golf, 10k less mileage cruise control,no leather, single cd.

the VW dealer only wants £500 to do the deal, and my current gti is going to need 4 new boots + mot + tax next month which is going to cost me about £500 anyway.

Took the v5 out for an extended test drive, and its a totally different drive to my turbo, bags of torque and it revs a lot easier, sounds good too, all this plus i get a decent vw approved warranty.

On paper looks like a good deal, but am I going to regret off loading my gti in 3 months, from a reliability point of view my car has already eaten 1 air mass meter and some vacumn tubing and the 1.8 reputation isnt that good anyway, but is it any more reliable than the V5?

Basicaly, I need some opinions!!

My friend owns a V5 which has done approx 120,000 miles now and it hs been very reliable. I like the sound of the engine and has decent power (but I have not driven a 1.8T so can not really compare). Only problem is that it can be a little thirsty. Also I think it maybe a higher insurance group (not 100% sure) and they seem to be harder to sell than the 1.8t.

just checked my insurance (egg), no diference (hurrah), but thats one thing I am a bit concerned about is the resale, My current gti is mucho desirable cos of all the toys and i'm guessing that the V5 is so much of wolf in sheeps clothing that no one knows about them... why is life so bl00dy complicated confused.gif

I had a v5 2.3 20v for 7 months while waiting for my GTI. It was a very nice car, but in comparison to the 2.0 MKIV(Non-Turbo) very front heavy and not as playful. The V5 as I'm sure you noticed is a very solid car being naturally aspirated. I would stick with the 1.8T, I would ask him to give you £500 and see what happens smile.gif

This is not based on having driven either car, but you seem to be nervous about the 1.8T costing you money down the line which is understandable as the car gets older.

Personally I would get the V5 but tell the dealer to skip the £500 and do a straight swap. Push him and see what he says!

Change is the only constant and change is good!

iv got a 1.8T and had trouble with it(MAF,LAMBDA probe, Running lean, Turbo pipes) but now it runs like a dream and iv done 120k as well. i love the handling compared to the V5 wich always seemed more laboured but i guess thats because its heavyer. id stay with the 1.8T for a while longer and see how it pans out. If it starts costing you lots to maintain get rid. 169144-ok.gif

Lately its developed a bit of a knock sometimes when you startup , just for a couple of seconds and occasionaly when you switch off it runs on for a second with a couple of dull knocks,it can go a few days without doing it; thinking back to my old school days ,a knock is usualy a very bad thing to be hearing,so part of my logic is off load it before it costs me anymore and get a car with a years warranty on it. I'm not 100% on modern engine management, but is a knocking indicative of impending doom?or is it a matter of changing a couple of sensors ? but then even a diagnostic plus labour and parts is going to cost me a ton minimum , add on to that I need 4 new tyres (16's), tax, mot which is going to need rear discs/pads + front pads , so i'm looking at a £500 minimum bill anyway.

Is it me or does it sound like i'm trying to convince myself!! crazy.gif

Is my logic twisted or am I making sense? confused.gif
