K Plate 80 Tdi (90hp) - Fly By Wire ?

Well apparently so but I thought FBW came a lot later in the life of these cars, ie A4s and the like, not Audi 80s from the early 90s.

Anyway, it may very well be the problem I'm having with a lack of power as the short throttle cable that stops somewhere under the dash, and then its wires, etc out to the diesel control pump, maybe stretched and needs adjusting.

This was the advice / prononsis of the cahp who did my MOT today.

Anyone know anything about the FBW set-up on early cars, ie 1993 ?

Didn't realise you had an 80 too 169144-ok.gif John Carter and I both have them lol.gif

Ours are both 1992 with L registrations, and both have FBW throttles.

There is a potentiometer at the throttle which may have a problem. I don't know what the range shoudl be, but would have thought it should be an easy job to plug in a multimeter to check the resistance at the highest and lowest values?

I have also found that www.audi-fans.net is a great resource for people with older cars 169144-ok.gif

How many miles has your done, mine does 130 miles a day and has racked up 179,000 miles now smashfreakB.gif and still returns between 51 and 57 to the gallon over a tank full 169144-ok.gif

Aye, I've had it 2 years now, done 130k miles. Few minor issues but just went through the MOT without any problems.

(see sig, been on there since I bought it wink.gif )

I'm going to take out the underside of the dash and poke me wee head up inside and take a look. Apparently you can adjsut them to take up the slack that occurs with higher miles so you are getting full travel on potentiometer - stretched cable means it doesn't go all the way to the end and hence foot to teh floor but 3/4 throttle in reality.

Aye, that how mine is now. Used to be much better, and you'd get used to how much the pedal travels in relation to speed in the gears, but over the past 4-5 months I've noticed it takes longer to accelerate, like when the mat gets stuck undfer the pedal and you don't get full pedal travel, and so I thought it was something else.

Thing is when Bruv took it to the MOT station, with any asking / prompting, the guy said "noticed it not pulling as well as it should?", to which Bruv replied "no as its my brothers car, why?"

Then the guy explained that its quite common on these cars of this age to have a stretched cable (short thing that runs from the pedal to the 'box' under the dash somewhere) which can be adjusted to take up the slack and regain full throttle.

So, tomorrow I'll be lodging myself upside down in the footwell of the Audi to see whats what and resolve the problem.

I'll be sure to take pics should I find the problem.

My heater direction control knob only does screen and floor, when you point it to centre vents it gets stuck, clicks past but no air comes out.

Okay, here we go, a pic of the FBW set-up in the Audi 80 TDi.

Basicaaly, in the pic the red circled object is (assumed) the Potentiometer as its connected to the mech at the top of the accelerator pedal by a short (2") rubbery rod. The connection can be adjusted by the nut (blue circle) at the end of the mech.

When you press the pedal it pulls on the rod which pulls the silver mech in a arcing motion centred around the gold nut at the top of the p/omiter.

I must have made about 4 or 5 complete turns of the adjsuter nut, but it didn't seem to take up any slack. I'm going to run the car to work (70 mile round trip) for a few days and see if I notice any difference. If not then it may be a case that the rubbery rob is expanding when the pedal is pressed as the silver bit its connected to it very hard to turn by hand and so I guess the tension on it is quite high.

I did adjust it too much and I could feel a stop against the pedal which I could go past if I pressed really hard, kind of a dull thud and then about 5mm more movement, but I guessed I'd gone too far so I backed it off until I could n longer feel this, so I think I'm at max adjustment.

Its a doddle to get to, just undo the few 8mm bolts holding the under panel on, pop you head down in the foot well and its about 6-8" up inside, easy to see and with a torch easy to adjust.

The heater control knob is a bugger to sort out smashfreakB.gif

You can wrap a pair of pliers in cloth and pull the dials from the three control knobs for the heating system.

You can then adjust the strength of the circlip on the back of the knob to give more grip.

If this doesn't work, release the hex bolts holding the glovebox in and grab a torch.

If you shine a torch back to the bulkhead behind the heating panel, you will see two cables.

One pulls a flap in the intake system to shut off the flow (when the fan speed is twisted past zero)

The other one activates the flap which changes the vent position. I tried spraying the cable in mine with loads of WD40 to get it to free up a little. I then manoeuvered it to get more air on the windscreen.

***WARNING*** I pushed it too far, heard a snap and now the air is stuck on the windscreen, but i can live with that 169144-ok.gif

I've just bought a complete set of dash switches - although I only needed the headlight adjuster - so if you need any spares let me know. My next job is to replace the instrument cluster bulbs - might try it this weekend... UHOH7.GIF

Had quite a good run yesterday (collecting the bagpipe 169144-ok.gif) and I thought 700 was within reach, but this morning it took an age to start - with the needle stubbornly refusing to move off the end stop. Flush.gif

So I chickened out and refuelled again at only 625 miles frown.gif

That mad dash to Windsor and back last Wednesday knackered any chances I had of beating you this time...
