tappers
I have re-posted here as this might be a better area. I am posting because of an issue with my parents car. They know nothing about cars (not that I know a huge amount) but I swear there is something wrong but maybe you could all advise if you think so too. Basically they have a 2000 W BMW 740i that has the 4.4 engine in it. It is auto/tip and has about 85,000 miles on it. They bought if off their neighbours who is heavily into cars and runs the local motor club and has had all sorts of flashy cars. Basically the problem is that the front tyres seem to wear pretty quickly on the outter edges. I had a feel about the tyres a little while ago and the inner edges seem fine with plenty of tread but the outter ones are pretty much smooth from the outside edge 1 or 2 inches in on both sides. Their neighbour said it has always done it and it is fine but I am just not sure this is correct, I have never had a car that has done it, not that I have owned a 7 series but it just does not sound right to me, what are your thoughts? gambba
It would seem slightly strange to me, especially a RWD car having its fronts wear quickly. Tyre wear should be even across the tyre on a normal road car. I would suggest that you have the alignment checked which is realtively cheap to get done. Best off is one of the places that uses the laser systems, not that I know of many that don't these days. By your description this could just be an alignment issue (Toe-in or toe-out), depending on exactly where the wear starts and ends or it could be a problem with the camber, which can occur if the car has ever been lowered.....not always but sometimes. tappers
Thanks for the reply Gambba. the car was taken to the local garage and the front tyres are going to be replaced as they are that bad and the tracking is going to be checked. The mechanic suggested that it could be the power steering that is causing the problem could that be right.
gambba
I'm not familiar with the set-up on the 7's, but I'm not sure what could be wrong with the PS to make the tyres wear like they have. It could be that he was refering to using the steering when the car is not rolling as this causes the tyres to roll on the rim and scrub the outer edges.... but this does not sound like your problem based on your description. Tracking and alignment check should reveal all and in most cases it can be easily rectified with a tweak here and there.
