martin9aj
Hey Ok, so I have just discovered that I have a small oil leak coming from the rocker / cam cover gasket, not the worst place but still a leak! The problem is I have a 1997 Polo 1.4 16v AFH engine! and you cant buy a gasket seperate, meaning you have to buy the WHOLE cylinder head cover which includes the gasket...we`re talking £130 from VW! What a rip off! I only need the gasket which is probably worth £2!!! Ive tried GSF / EURO / ALLPARTS and the usual others but none can supply the rocker cover gasket alone AND it DOESNT come in with a head gasket set just to make things worse Where can i get a gasket for this??? Anyone got a new one spare??? Any ideas??? ANYONE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM??? Thanks
jamesrt
Hi there, I've got the same problem and gone through the same ritual of Europarts etc. I've tried using sealant twice. No joy. Have you had any luck finding a replacement gasket, or is the only option spending the money with VW? Has anyone else got any ideas?
Hudster
no chance you can go to a breakers yard and rip one off a crippled polo?
pingpongpo
How about buy some gasket material and then use the old gasket as a template and cut yourself a new one?
jamesrt
Yes, thought about that, but they will probably want at least £50 if they're savvy and it still may not seal properly. I'd probably give it a go in favour of £130 for a new one though! Cheers for your thoughts.
jamesrt
Cheers for the reply. Nothing to loose by butchering the original as it looks like i'm going to have to buy another one (new or second hand) anyway. Can you recommend anywhere i can buy decent gasket material? For ref, the original is rubber and at least 6mm thick.
pingpongpo
Not sure where you'll be able to buy the rubber from as you'll have to make sure its the right specification so it won't melt or degrade etc. I would suggest having a look through your yellow pages under some 'rubber' headings and give some people a ring. If they don't do it ask them if they know someone who does.
