mikeg1962
My wife had the brakes totally fail on her 2001 Polo Match day before yesterday... Going down a hill to a junction, she put her foot on the brake... it vibrated a lot [ABS] and then the pedal went to the floor and zero braking! Thankfully she managed to steer up a hill and came to a stop. Funny thing is, the brakes seem to be working now. Any ideas? Or must I take it into a VW Stealer??? Thanks in advance DR1VER
m4ttm4son
I think I'd take it in. I'd crap myself if that happened to me and wouldn't want to chance it happening again. Don't need to take it to a stealer though, any garage that can plug in for diagnostic check will do I'd have thought. My GF was quoted £30/50 to plug in at VW (JUST TO PLUG IT IN) to see why her orange light came on (lupo), went to local garage and he sorted it for a lot less. DR1VER [/ QUOTE ] Well I took it to a non-VW dealer, he checked the car out. Said it was probably the brake master cylinder (no ABS warning light), but couldn't find a fault in it! He says this kind of thing does happen (!!!???) and the car should be OK now. Car then went through MOT no problem. Any mechanics around to pass a comment? It sure sounds flakey to me... what can I do to make sure it doesn't happen again? Or maybe the mechanic is right and it won't happen again? m4ttm4son
I have no idea. No experience of that kinda thing. Sounds scary as hell. Glad I'm an experienced in engine braking, never know when I might need it!
benjie
There was a press release which I'm struggling to remember, it was for a Golf, but it may apply here. Something along the lines of certain rubber hoses becoming brittle with time and after about 5 years they ended up cracking giving intermittant brake failure. I really don't remember anything else, it all depends on whether 6n2 Polo's and 1J Golf's have the same sort of braking system? I know the door handles are the same!
