robbielee
This is my first post on these pages and I'm pleased to say I will soon be the owner of an Audi A3 Sportback 2.0T Special Edition DSG in Brilliant Black. At the moment I drive a 52 reg Renault Clio Sport 172 but with a promotion at work I was offered a company car. The choice of the car was pretty much down to me (my only "must have" criteria from the boss was that it had to be 5 door - hence the Sportback) and I was given a budget of £18k from the company with the option to personally contribute up to £5k of my own money on top. So after a fair bit of reseach I plumped for the Special Edition A3. I placed my order today and managed to get one which will be ready for me to collect on May 19th for £21,407 all in so a cool £2288 off the list price. Although I'm gonna be contributing £3407 myself I should manage to get approx £6500 for my Clio so I'll still have £3k to pocket from the deal. I decided to be a bit of a miser & didn't go for any extras, I toyed with the idea of going for Xenons, Auto lights and auto wipers as these are all things that were standard on my Clio and I probably will miss them for a few weeks but I'm sure I'll soon get used to not having them. The only thing I did splash out on was going for the DSG over the standard 6 speed manual. Was this a wise move? I've heard awesome things about the DSG but the A3 I test drove did not have it. Anyway, I've rattled on for long enough but I just thought I'd share my joy with you all! Any comments/advice are more than welcome. I can't wait to be an Audi driver! h5djr
Some people do not like the DSG, but a lot of people, me included think it's wonderfull. To me it brings a whole lot more enjoyment to my driving. When you get it don't be tempted to just put it in D or S and leave it their. It's much more enjoyable to use the manual tip-tronic mode and use either the lever or the paddles. The main reason some people seem to dislike the DSG is that it does automatically change up to the next gear when you hit maximum revs in any gear, even in the 'manual' mode. If you think this will be problem - change your order now before it's too late. Personally I would ask the dealer if it's possible to drive a DSG equipped car just to be sure you are happy with the way it works.
cw955
Congratulations on your choice. If you've not tried DSG I would give it a go; I think it's the absolute business (which is why I've ordered one) but as David says some people don't like it. robbielee
Cheers lads, on your advice I've just spoken to my local Audi dealership in Manchester and they have an A3 2.0 TDi with DSG that I can test drive. Obviously I haven't told them that I've bought a car elsewhere! So I'm gonna try it out, but I'm very confident I'll love it so don't think I'll be needing to change my order. I bet you're looking forward to getting your's in April Chris! Please keep me updated when you get it.
CarMad
Welcome to TSN. DSG is fantastic. I'm a die hard manual fan but DSG has changed all of that. I can chill and let the car do all the work or play with the paddles and go maximum attack on the back roads. Have a look in the GTI section for loads of posts about the pros and cons of DSG. Have a read of the review of mine, click the link in my sig. You won't be dissapointed its a top car and DSG is worth the money. Oh and I'd add the Rain sensing wipers pack, great value for money and probably the best extra I've added to mine.
DukeDesmo
+1 on the DSG , the auto wipers/lights you can do without but get the Xenons if you can.
robbielee
The car was ordered with the dealer on Thursday, does anyone know if I will still be able to add any extras? Decided I'd like to add the multi-function steering wheel, the auto light & rain sensors and the xenons. These are all things that are standard in my 172 and I've reached the conclusion I'd just miss them too much!!
Milo
Yep, no problem. You can alter the spec right up to the build date so adding more options now shouldn't be a problem

Fergy
Welcome and Nice car. Itll be just like my other car then but with a body kit. The missus always comments on the performance but doesnt like the understated looks. Guess you cant win em all. Maybe I should have got a scooby! Id agree with DukeDesmo on the DSG knock the gear lever over to triptronic and have fun with those paddles. My engine has just done £3k in about 6 months and although fast still hasnt loosened up. harddrive
Can Wait to see the pictures of your new wheels when you get it. The only other thing that I would say as well as getting the DSG is Xenon's as they are seriously worth the money. My wife has an A2 with the standard lights and as standard lights go i think the Audi ones are a bit If you can afford to go with Xenons I would do it, otherwise I recommend upgrading the bulbs when you get the car to Powerbulbs. robbielee
I've added the Rain/Lights sensor pack plus the Multi Function steering wheel to my order. Don't think I can quite stretch to the Xenons. Does anyone know if the Xenon Bulbs from Powerbulbs are good? Are they as effective as factory fit Xenons? ksteed
Hi guys, new to the forum. I have ordered one of these 2.0 T s-line special editions with DSG also, are there any pictures of it anyware as apparently there is meant to be a revised front/rear bodywork along with a rear spoiler ? Would like to see what is on its way to me ! Kevan
DukeDesmo
[ QUOTE ] Does anyone know if the Xenon Bulbs from Powerbulbs are good? Are they as effective as factory fit Xenons? [/ QUOTE ] No, so called 'Xenon' bulbs are nowhere near as good as proper Xenon lights, IMHO Xenons really are worth the extra cost - much more so than 'convenience' extras like auto lights or wipers etc.
d3fy
well i guess that depends on how much dusk/night time driving you do, I would not pay £600 for them
Simonl
Xenon bulbs are a worthy upgrade. Got mine off ebay for £16 (silverstars)

h5djr
Uprates bulbs (Osram Silver Stars or Philips Vision Plus) defintely make a difference. I've fitted them to my last 4 A3s. One A3 1.8T I had, which I only kept for a couple of weeks, had Xenon headlights and personally I prefer the uprated bulbs. The Xenons produced good light but seem to 'bounce' much more as I was driving. Uprated bulbs are, of course, much cheaper than factory fit Xenons. The situation may change in the next few years as legislation is introduced (EU wide) to make all cars drive with headlights on at all times. It's already required in some EU countries. robbielee
Cheers for the info lads. Like I say, I've got Xenons on my current car and I do really like them, but I'm not sure I like them £600 worth if you get my meaning. If I can get some bulbs for £20 that make a decent difference then that will do me fine!

Its one of the best things ive added, if I drive my other car at night its like the lights arent even on there is that much difference(and that is fitted with Osram silverstars). They would be top of my list of extras to add if I was buying again.
CarMad
Roblee7 Glad you liked the review. To anyone else getting one, give the link on my sig a click. They car is getting better and better. Its in for its first service next week so will let you all know how that goes. I have drivin plenty of quick gears but sometimes the turn of speed is genuinely suprising I have to say. I'd like it not to kick down so quickly sometimes as the power / torque building up from low revs and loads of torque to high revs and loads of power is great fun. Not sure there are many other 4 cylinder petrols with as much charachter either.

Guest slittley
Congratulations on your order. I took delivery of the 2.0T manual version at the beginning of March and am very happy with it indeed. I did test drive another sportback with DSG but decided it wasn't worth the extra £1300. DSG seems to appeal to many people but not to some (like me)! Good luck. I'm sure you'll be delighted with the car. Steve
