v23
I've read the posts about the CV joint noises indicating failure and just wanted to clarify something. Whilst pulling away to the left, if I 'squint my ears' I sometimes hear a clicking noise. Also whilst taking a sweeping -ish corner at some speed or whilst accelrating, again if I 'squint my ears' I can hear a lowish duh-duh-duh, but it's really quiet. How loud is a gone CV joint? Passengers have noticed neither noise and if the stereo is one I can hear neither. Does this sound like the dreaded CV joint, or could it be something less expensive? What does the track rod end sound like when it's going/gone? It's in for a service on Monday anyway so they're gonna check, thing is I mentioned the CV joint and they gave me a rough cost of £300 ish as the dearest price just for one side!!! Luckily though, as with the gearbox problem I had this time last year the problem has come at bonus time. Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers. I paid about £130 for one C.V joint which I thought was a tad expensive.
v23
Nope, service is extra. This is at VW though. Maybe I'll just get the service done at VW and the joint elsewhere.
Wobby
Both mine have gone (my fault, the boots had split!) I still have one to change. I get a clicking noise when steering one way, i only get it if i accelerate hard out of a junction and its been clicking like this for months now. I bought OEM ones and they come out at £100 (ish) each and fitting took us a couple of hours with Mulkbears advise. There was a CV bloke on Ebay, reckons he does some good quality ones for £45 for 2!! His company supply to a number of dealers but he didn't think they supplied to VW. I went the OEM from Eurocarparts route for mine. If its ever clicking and your not accelerating i would suspect something else. They do click all the time when completely gone, but its more like a bang than a click. If they fail you will lose power and roll to a stop! Wobby
Gaz, £130 is a good price, did they use original or OEM parts?
v23
Thanks for the advise fellas, just had the brakes checked at kwikfit and got them to check the joints whilst they were at it. Seems the ns boot has split all the way round, he said that just a boot replacement should fix it though as the joint hadn't gone yet? My local independant quoted me around £130 for replacement so that's looking like the better option.
Wobby
Considering the work involved, £130 is a good price if its for VW part. If its clicking it has started to go. But if they clean out the dirt and re grease it, it will only get worse gradually over time. Could well last years. Apparently they are very tough, mulkbear has never known a Passat CV joint to go completely.
v23
Cheers Wobby. Made me feel even better, clean, regrease and new boot sounds quite good and could well work out a lot cheaper. Thanks very much.
ocrp
I know exactly what you mean about the "low duh-duh noise". Both my CV's have gone and they are both clicking. One side clicks when I take sweeping turns and the other makes loud knocks when I turn out of corners. The thing is, I had a knackered track rod end last month and it did make a nasty low rumbling noise. The other one is being checked this Friday on a (old) VW safety recall. The noise is still present so I'm not sure if it's the other track rod end or the CV joint, but I'm pretty sure its the joints. It's hard to tell if it's road noise you hear or something else. £300 for one side is very dear. I've got a few quotes so far and they wide ranging. I got £318 for both sides from one VW dealer, and £432 from another 3 miles away! It seems that the part price can vary greatly from model to model, mine were £85.15 + VAT, but can be as much as £130. Labour is around 1.5 hours per side. It's worth shopping around for prices. You'd be surprised at what you'll get.

[/ QUOTE ] Dont really know the answer to that, all I know is the part came from a company called SENAR, the garage had trouble getting the right part and had the car for 2 days......it will not be going back there except maybe for tyres. I've got a 130 TDI Sport so my part is likely to be the most expensive out of the lot, the indy said that the part would be around £80, not sure if that's a VAG part though. v23
You were right about the difference in dealership prices. Richard Alexander in Otley - £335 inc VAT JCT600 in Bradford - £258 inc VAT Lightcliffe Motors near Halifax - £207 in VAT Guess who's going to be getting my future custom if the robbing bastards at Richard Alexander don't drop the price for me? Waitey
mordecai, i'm guessing by the garages you have had quotes from you are in the leeds area. clear of Otley dealer they are my dad had a bad experience with them when he had his polo. Which indie garage do you use? I know of one in Gildersome (MT Motors), have never used them though. Hope you get it sorted.
v23
Bigal, I've used the Otley garage for ages and never had any problems until it was bought out by Richard Alexander. Massingberd were always great imo. The independant I got a quote from is Crossleys in Otley, they're a pretty small outfit and I haven't used them yet. I think I'm going to go to Lightcliffe for the CV joint. What happened with the Polo?

Waitey
mordecai, it was when it was massingberg. My dad had a motobility car, and every time it went in for a service they were telling him the car had to have stone chips repainted and quoting him silly prices for doing it(£400+)We had it done by a bloke up by the airport for £80. they were also saying other things needed doing which didnt. fair enough apart from the stone chips my dad wouldnt have paid for the repairs, but its just not right. I have been in there since it changed to Richard Alexander and the young lad on the desk didnt have a clue what he was doing, so i have being going to the one at Elland road, they are very helpful. Where in Otley is Crossleys i might try them for my next service.
ocrp
It seems that the non-dealership places are using OEM (non VW branded) parts that are much cheaper. I assume the quality is the same if they are manufactured in the same place (as they claim ) Obviously the labour at the dealers is going to be 40-50% more per hour. pugboy
Everything in Otley is expensive though mate! Thats what you get for living in a posh place. I will be up there Saturday to visit my Grandma (once she has finished down the old biddies club). Did someone say they had never known a Passat drive shaft to actually fail? My mates went the other week and he had to get towed home by the AA. Mind you my mates car is ropey.

v23
Just thought I'd give you an update. Car went in for a service yesterday and they checked the joints. Left hand boot split all the way round, grease still in it though and joint making a noise. Right hand boot also badly split but grease still in it and joint should be OK. Car going in on Thursday for left hand joint and right hand boot - £300 inc VAT. Not too bad, and certainly a lot less than I hand imagined. ocrp
Mine going in on Friday for both joints. £233 all in. Fingers crossed it sorts out the problem
