Botang
if its cutting out it should be giving a fault code that with the assistance of vag-com/dealer diagnostic test will point you in the right direction
Ska
Sounds like the Throttle body to me. Or the Idle by pass valve, Give it good clean with carb cleaner or change it all together but check the codes as Botang says first.
Muppet_man
This sounds very much like you have either a collapsed fuel filter or other fuel delivery problem. That's why your resting the car brings it back to full power. If you've not had your filter changed in line with servicing it might be worth trying. If you are a bit of a DIY man and don't mind traveling with a set of spanners and a pair of gloves, next it conks out you just try craking one of the fuel rail nuts. keep your face well away, as if it's not a fuel problem even with the car stopped there will still be quite a bit of pressure in the lines and it will spray out. If however this is the fault then it will barely dribble - you've only then got to find the problem in the fuel system. Good luck
