ncr666
Have an A3 2.0TFSI DSG with a "grinding" noise coming from the steering rack. Would like to know if anyone else is experiencing the same problem. Already had two replacements and the car is only 9 months old.
rball
When does yours happen? I have a 2000 S3 and when I accelerate on full lock (notably to the right), I get a shuddering from the front wheels...not sure what it is to be fair! Thought it could have been the EPS..tried it with it turned off but made no difference.
ncr666
Grinding noise appears when steering to the left but at low speeds. Now waiting for a repsonse from Audi UK as to why the 3rd rack has started to make the same noise as the previous two.
rball
Hmm...strange. I think it may be CV Joints, Wheel bearing or even anti roll bar/bushes but haven't got them checked as yet The ARB bushes are apparently a weak point on the S3. May be the same deal on your A3
AndyBarnsley
Hi, I've had my steering rack replaced on my A3 2.0TDi Sport and the noise still occurs occasionally and since it was done the steering wheel is not even straight when going in a straight line! It's just a pain taking it into the dealers as i live about 45mins drive away Andy
ncr666
Hi Andy What year is your A3? The noise starts off intermittent but gradually gets worse. Luckily the warrany has covered the two replacements. ncr666
AndyBarnsley
Hi, Its a 2006MY which I got at the end of July last year. Andy
Guest slittley
I also had a 2.0TDi and the steering rack on that made a mild grinding sound when turning the wheel at low speeds. The rack was replaced and the replacement made a similar noise! I now have a 2.0T and although much quieter, the steering still makes a noise when turning the wheel but it's not loud enough to concern me. ncr666
Hi Steve, you ought to pursue this with Audi. They are going to try and fix the steering rack on ours for a 3rd time. Love the car so hope it works this time. ncr666 A3 2.0T FSI Sport DSG (05 REG)
simon999
Gearbox mountings definitely worth checking in my experience but often missed as a possible cause of this sort of noise. -------- 8P 3 door A3 2.0 TDI SPORT DSG Lava Grey

Gren
Same on ours - grinding noise when manouvering at slow speeds. Took it into the dealerships who said it was a problem known to Audi but that they did not know what the problem was caused by. Sounded like a lot of horse sh*t but were put on a 'list' who would be notified if a solution was found. Also were assured that if it got worse they would do something about it. That was nearly a year ago - things are much the same (so my wife says - I hardly ever notice it), will be serviced soon so may take it to different dealer and check their response. simon999
I would check with audi again. I think solution may now be available. I've had exactly the same problem you describe. My car's been at Audi's UK head office at Milton Keynes for 14 weeks. Got it back last week, now running like a dream. They say gearbox mountings were at fault and that they have never managed to find the problem before now. They changed absolutely everything twice before they found the problem, two new gearboxes, two complete front drive shafts, two steering racks, wheels, subframe, the works, but finally, now it's fixed. Got a year's free extra warranty from Audi too for all the hassle! Could be the solution you've been waiting for...
Gren
Thanks. Will make enquiries. Hope you had a courtesy car for those 14 weeks
simon999
Audi customer services came up trumps. Had a brand new A6 3.0 TDI Quattro DSG as a courtesy car- such a hardship!!

tlambe
Just bought an A3 2.0T FSI Sport which has this problem. Most noticeable when parking or moving steering at very low speeds or when stationary. Docklands Audi have spent today looking at the suspension/steering etc with no successs. The best they can say is they have another car which they tested and it did the same thing!
ncr666
Sorry to hear you are having the same problems we did. Let's hope they fix it for you, it's a great car otherwise!
tinka
ncr666,i see you have a bmw on order,a good choice if i may say so ,i have a 320d m sport due on the 20th of november and i cant wait, i think more and more people are becoming frustrated with audi now,it seems the image is more important than the owning/driving experience? . ncr666
As you may have read our replacement Audi had the same fault so it had to go. The coupe was our only real choice left available. Picking it up beginning of Dec, like you say we can't wait. Enjoy the new motor
