Suitable All-in-One detector/GPS for Ireland

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am living in Ireland and unfortunately the law is different over here regarding speed detectors etc and as such our blackspots and speed zones are not mapped as per the UK and we only have about 4 fixed cameras anyway (Lots more on the way though).

Anyway, looking to get something like the RA Plus but do not need the databases of data.

Overall is the RA Plus the best actual "detector" (Not interested in jammer as want to keep my license) - or is there something better to do what I want? I want the speed reading etc so that I can see my "real" speed and want the different detection types (Laser, Gatso) etc.

Sorry for the long vague question but I know there are plenty of good guys in here will be able to decipher exactly what I am asking.

Thanks

A somewhat unusual requirement (from the British point of view). If you want to get an indication of speed, then it will have to be a GPS unit - however, these are very much designed for reporting fixed locations, using a database. If you want a good detector, then you should be considering something like a Bel, Snooper or Valentine.

Be aware that laser detectors are not much more use than a chocolate teapot. By the time the detector gives you a warning it's too late to slow down - the laser gun measures your speed in about 1/3 second, and the beam is so narrow that you don't get any signal scatter from other vehicles being targetted. Essentially, by the time you've heard the warning and looked at your speedo, that's it - that's the speed that has been measured.

Radar detectors are more useful - Gatsos transmit continuously, and can be detected before you pass them. Radar signals do scatter and reflect off other vehicles, so you also stand a good chance of getting a warning from a hand held radar gun - provided there are other vehicles on the road. However, the use of radar speed detection devices is decreasing - or at least it is in Britain.

For info on a range of devices, and comparisons, take a look here.
