Some Clarification please to soothe my paranoia!

Hi

I am au-fait with the concept of not letting the insurer know about every little dints and getting it done privately etc but my eyes were opened by the comment in my accident thread about mayb enot having Audi have the details of a repair on file for some reason.

What is the basis for this; would it [potentially] affect the value of car [or anything else] and is it a strong reason to use another [insurer approved] garage for repairs?
