Advent
Been driving all day, no problems, smooth as you like. 30 mins ago as I was coming home I started the engine and a got a crazy idling around 800rpm, needle jumping up and down. The engine sounded like it was being choked! Opened up the bonnet and noticed it shaking violently then smooth then violent again. Drove it for a bit down the road and lost power in 1st and 2nd down to 5mph, picked up a bit in 3rd. Anyway left the engine running for a bit and it got a bit better, limped home. It's now almost normal again...wtf just happened?!! a3 2000 1.8 se 68000 miles.
Advent
Any ideas? It was almost like a car heart attack.
Drillslinger
No clue really Have you had any other problems with starting it? Mine has needed 2-3 attempts before it'll start almost every morning for months and sometimes it does something similar to what you've described. Whenever it does this, I kill the engine, restart and usually it'll run normal. When my TQ does this "Odd" start it sounds to me like it's not firing on all 4 cylinders. This leads me to suspect my problem is ignition related. If yours sounds similar, try pulling your spark plugs and look for fouling (oil) or see if it looks like the end of the plug has been "Baked". Advent
No problem starting it and no change after re-starting it, it just seems to have gotten better after driving it and reving the engine, almost felt like it wasn't getting enough fuel. cw955
I had a similar problem on my TT, misfire on starting up. The dealer "cleaned the throttle bodies" and the problem went away.
mrkipper
Allo mate sounds like a problem i had,and it turned out to be a coil pack breaking down.revs all over the place and no go in it,day later ok again.Other factors could be the maf sensor or the that throttle housing needs looking into that controls the throttle.
