10 days to go, some questions...

Recommended Posts

Hi, I’d like to introduce myself as a soon-to-be GTI owner. I’m picking up my new reflex silver 3-door DSG on 16 May, which I am buying through Motorpoint after a friend of mine had a very positive experience buying from them. I’ve driven a 1995 Fiesta Si (1.4 litre 8-valve) for almost 6 years which I bought during my student days, so as you can imagine the prospect of upgrading to a GTI (which will be my first new car) is very exciting to say the least!!

My car has been imported from the Netherlands and I’ve been informed that it is full UK-spec, although from what I’ve read on various forums I’m not expecting it to come with a space-saver spare wheel. However, I consider this a small sacrifice given that I’m saving over £3,000 on list not to mention the six-month waiting list the local dealer (Specialist Cars, Kirkcaldy) quoted me. Another bonus is that Motorpoint have said that I will be the first registered keeper of the vehicle, which I understand isn’t always the case with parallel imports – something to bear in mind for anyone else considering the car supermarket route.

While I count down the days (and minutes) until I pick up my new baby, I have a few questions which I’d be grateful if you could give me a steer on:

1. Registering the car with VW UK for recall notifications etc – is it best to do this via the local stealer or should I just cut out the middleman and write to Milton Keynes directly?

2. Is it possible to buy the space-saver spare wheel from a local stealer, and if so what are they charging for it?

3. What is the best way to connect an iPod to the RCD 300 system – via the official VW part or is there an alternative which offers better functionality? I’m thinking of a glovebox installation to keep it locked away from prying eyes but not sure who to approach in terms of installation and parts. Basically I’m after a ‘clean’ installation where the iPod is neatly tucked away.

4. I’ve read with much interest the posts on anti-theft wheel bolts – I don’t have much knowledge on this but I gather that McGard are the best tried & trusted aftermarket brand around – is this correct?

5. Finally, and apologies if this is slightly off-topic, but I wonder if anyone knows of the best value online retailer of Red Line Oil products? I see that Demon Tweeks carry the full range but their delivery charges seem a bit high - £7.25 economy delivery for a bottle of WaterWetter for example… which I consider daylight robbery!

Many thanks for any help you can offer up in relation to the above… it’s great to see such a knowledgeable community of GTI owners on the web. I look forward to joining your ranks very soon!!

Hey Sneak, welcome to TSN...not too long to wait now smile.gif

I can help you with a few of your questions as my car was also an import (from Motorprovider) :

1. From first hand experience I would recommnend getting your V5 document asap and take it to your local dealer together with your owners wallet etc. Ask them to register your car with VW (UK) - they just enter the details into a computer database I think. It may be worth asking Motorpoint about warranty cover before receipt of your V5 - I would be interested to hear their answer !.

4. I think the McGards came out best in a test, particularly the high security ones - part no. 28018SL - easy to fit and many posts on TSN to read.

Hope this helps 169144-ok.gif

Cheers Jonny, much appreciated; you’ve answered my most important questions... smile.gif

I ordered a set of McGards from PRI Racing... they arrived Saturday morning; so ready to fit as soon as I get the car home. From what I’ve read on the other posts I think I’ll just leave them showing rather than try to maintain the OEM look by painting them black or refitting the bolt caps... my gut feeling is telling me that a scummy wheel thief might be slightly more inclined to just move on to the next car if they’re immediately visible – well, that’s my hope at least.

Other than that, got my insurance sorted out tonight so I’m good to go with the pickup in Glasgow on Tuesday evening (6pm)... I just hope everything goes smoothly. I’ll let you know how I get on, can’t wait!!!

A Warm Welcome to Tyresmoke, Sneak 169144-ok.gif.

Coming from a 1995 Fiesta you'll find a huge performance difference, so take it easy and get to know your new car gradually. DSG also has a learning curve as many posts here will have doubtless already informed you.

After your GTI is run in, I would strongly recommend doing a CarLimits course with Andy Walsh. It's a great way of exploring the absolute limits of your car and helping to keep you safe. At £170 each (4 cars), it's very good value.

I guarantee you'll love your new GTI. Enjoy!!

I know how you feel, I bought a GTI a couple of weeks ago and my last car for the past 4 years was a Fiesta Zetec 1.25! blush.gif

Regarsd the Ipod question - VW dealers do an Ipod adaptor - costs £150 fitted. The lead is anywhere you like - mine is in the glovebox. If you have a cd stacker then this will become redundant but the single slot in the head unit remains in operation. Hope this helps.
