Strangely it appeared that the 'I' in 'GTI', did not originally stand for 'Injection' as the german word for injection is 'Einspritzung', which leads you, heaven forbid, to a GTE! Perhaps it was suggested by Guiguaro himself, as in italian you would get 'Gran Turismo Iniezione'. Others have suggested that since Audi already had the Audi 80 GTE, Volkswagen simply used 'GTI' to be different." Snoopy Posted June 9, 2006 Report Share Posted June 9, 2006 This has been debated so many times in the GTI ranks, (i have heard it for 20+ years... ) But the final conclutions were GTI has no real meening. Marketing men and VW importers all round the world are saying what they think it meens or how it came about but the men involved with the GTI, VW Engineers in Germany have said in the past it has no real meening. Cuprabob Posted June 9, 2006 Report Share Posted June 9, 2006 My understanding was that the original prototype was called a "Gti" but actually had twin Webber carbs reinforning the fact that "i" is not for injection. RedRobin Posted June 9, 2006 Report Share Posted June 9, 2006 Although no-one really knows for ceratin what it stands for, I think it's reasonable to say that now "GTi" or "GTI" stands for what is a very iconic motor car, especially the Mk5 as its most recent incarnation.
