Stereo volume fades out whilst driving

2001(Y) Golf GT TDI 115BHP - 64K.

Whilst driving my stereo's volume just fades out - the stereo is still on and the CD is still playing but there is no sound. After a while the volume returns to its previous level. Tends to happen in the morning. When i power off the stereo and turn it back on - there is sound for about 2seconds but again fades out.

Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it?

What radio is fitted?

its a factory fitted stereo: Gamma version.

it may be a loose wire at the back of the head unit.

other than using a screwdriver, how do you remove the head unit?

There's these special things you need, like a key. But if you cut something of credit card thickness and stiffness into about 8mm strips, you'll find one fits to the left of the << button, and one to the right of the > Push them in a few cm then it should pull straight out.

there's a feature on those radios that increases or decreases the volume as the engine/road noise increases or decreases... you might have a dodgy sensor

replacement gamma units on ebay are fairly cheap

Perhaps worth turning the GALA volume preset down to 0 so that it is turned off
