As Red said, i've only experienced two or three wild claims (the two you've mentioned) in the 18 months i've been reading this forum. These were then taken as gospel by the others on TSN and has been batted around ever since (not that we care)... what's that expression... dung.gif sticks.

Hardly hundreds of wild claims tongue.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Only been on here 6 months or so and haven't seen that many wild claims but the DB9 is also my fave! It's true that many of the GTI drivers on here are passionate about their cars but not all of us make such wild claims grin.gif

Agree with Red you have to be able to laugh at yourself and if poking fun at us brings you some joy, bring it on! grin.gif

Claims come in many different forms.

For example, the following words have all been used to describe the GTi's acceleration...

Breath-taking

Awesome

Scary

Mind blowing

Most are given with little context as to what they're against, in which case you'd have to say they are all wild claims...

Anyway, I wasn't looking for a full-out argument or to flame GTi owners, because most seem to be reasoned these days in my opinion on here. Just pointing out the glass houses and stones thing.... 169144-ok.gif

Agree that some of those words are probably not suitable but if you were to describe your 6 (645?) as having awesome performance some guy in an M6 could easily come along and say "no actually sir MY superduper M6 has awesome power, yours is just quick" or some other word one peg below awesome, whatever that is grin.gif

You've hit the nail on the head, but perhaps not in the intended manner....

I'd NEVER describe the 645 as having awesome performance - yet it'd outrun such cars described as having 'awesome' performance by some.

See what I'm saying - it's knowing what 'awesome' performance is (the M6 being in such a bracket).

Much of what we are so enthusiastic about is relative to our expectations and not necessarily compared to the performance of other cars. The GTI is 'only' a hatchback Golf but this Mk5 has much of what the now classic original Mk1 had. Many of the GTI boys here aren't old enough to remember the Mk1 and what a milestone it was in the 1970s.

I've just driven home with a musician friend plus his sound gear and mine fully loaded with the back seats down and acceleration from 90 was still very impressive. I was impressed, as was he who has driven Mustangs, without thinking of any other car whatsoever.

No-one (I think) is saying that the GTI comes anywhere near your big Beamer 6-series, unless of course they are teasing you. 169144-ok.gif

Chavtastic.

The VXR has been timed around race tracks by a number of respected organisations. In each of these cases this was by an experienced peddler, that wouldn't be undone by a little extra horsepower.

As far as I know in every test the Gti has lapped quicker than the VRX and consistently they put this down to chassis balance.

Face it, the VRX is all numbers and plastic.

All that matters is that you have the car that works for you. That might be a clapped out old Metro or it might be a Veyron, it simply doesn't matter.

[/ QUOTE ]

Indeed. 169144-ok.gif

I bought the GTI because it suits my needs perfectly.

If an OTT bodykit and the-most-powerfullest-and-fastest-hot-hatch-from-0-60 were my priorities, I would have bought something else.

Then again, nothing would make me buy a Vauxhall. dung.gif

I'd take one of those over an Astra VXR any day yelrotflmao.gif

There's something about old bangers that I just love! Fiat 500's, really old 3 series, big old volvo's, 1970's/80's estate Mercs and strangely old Madza 626's?!?. Oh just loads more!

Recently I toyed with the idea of getting an old estate like a 3 series or Merc for a few hundred quid off fleabay (some great stuff for under 500 quid) to use for going to the tip, sticking my bike in, supermarket trip etc but the insurance was around 3-400 quid! Feck the GTI only costs a couple of hundred more confused.gif

Bottom Line is that the VXR is a Vauxhall and the Golf is a VW. In terms of class, taste, quality and credibility they are leagues apart. The same can be said about the Ford ST. The missus would not be seen dead in a Vauxhall or Ford (her words btw) but ADORES smlove2.gif driving and being seen in the golf. No she aint a closset snob - honest wink.gif. For a lot of people (including me) its a badge thing, all of which reflect in the residuals.

Ermmm, and the initial purchase price.

If you keep them less than 3 years, you'll find there'll be very little, if anything, between them because of the purchase cost of the Golf being higher than it's rivals.

Longer than that and the residuals will kick in and you'll be quids in. Less than that, and it's a badge/preference thing.

Just looking at the What Car real value figures.

This is the total cost over three years(36000 miles) including, depreciation, tax, insurance, petrol and servicing.

The cars are originally priced at their target price so this would include available discounts.

VXR.........£20,494

Focus ST3...£19,640

Golf GTI....£14,847

So if you sold after three years you would be £5000 better off with the Golf 169144-ok.gif
