rottenbend
It's usually a build up of bacteria. They love aircon systems. I usually try a couple of cycles on full hot followed by full cold. Not sure how good it is for the system but usually kills thge little blighters
SamD
I suffer from the same problem in my S4 and was about to phone the dealers... might try as RottenBend suggests before I do though. How long do you normally blast it on each cycle?
rottenbend
Two or three minutes usually suffices. Theorectically, it's not the actual temperature which kills them more the rapid change in temperature. Now the winter's on its way the smell might go away on its own as soon as we get a cold snap. Otherwise, it's down to the dealers as you say
SamD
I'll give it a try this afternoon in that case!

SamD
Well I tried the full hot/fullcold/full hot/full cold trick suggested by RottenBend last night... will check later today whether it has helped. Ordered some of the Comma stuff yesterday too.
fresco1
I once tried the DIY aircon canister thing on the wife's Land Rover, and IMHO the smell it left was much worse than the original bacteria pong .. ! Maybe I did something seriously wrong, but it effectively overlaid the stink with a sickly sweet smell. In the end, and not just down to this, we replaced with a new Landie - and the smell went! I'd be a bit dubious of ever using one of those DIY solutions again - next time I'd try a local aircon reconditioner place I reckon. Sorry this is not more positive! Avus_Bub
I did Mrs Bubs Clio a while back with the cleaner foam. I got it from my Renault dealer. 100% success No nasty whiff since. You have to spray it directly onto the evaporator otherwise you won’t kill the bacteria. This usually means gaining access from under the bonnet and the pollen filter housing. Vic
Always try to switch off the aircon about ten minutes before the end of your journey. This allows the evaporator to dry out before the car is parked up, thus preventing the damp enclosed environment in which bacteria loves to grow. Used this method on air con cars for over ten years now, never experienced a bad smell. ..Well, not from the aircon anyway! Vic
johnlondonw3
i only bought my A4,2003 plate last Friday and Ive just noticed how badly it smells when I first get in and it then seems to go away. I park it up and come back and as soon as I get in it theres a really obvious smell I'll try the heater method, failing that I'll give speeding a call and see what they rekon is best. I must admit the thought of introducing a sickly sweet smell over the already rancid smell doesnt appeal. Bubs Im a complete dudnder head with anything mechanicle, how would I recognise the evaporator ? Cheers

johnlondonw3
just been out and bought a tin of Comma Air conditioning cleaner and run it through the system for 10mins on recirculation mode. ELSA_MAN
It will prob come back, the only system worth using is Wynn's Aircomatic system. We've worked this out after multiple returns by customers. I was once told by an audi master-technician that using the ECON button a lot can be a cause of the bad smells, cant remember exactly how. Im now wondering if if could be a water leak .The rear screen was doesnt seem to work, could it be that theres a blocked pipe or its become disconected ? If so how do I fix it ?
