I have an A3 2.0T fsi Quattro SE which has a clunking/backlash noise coming from the transmission when going up through the gears, more noticeable with the window open expecially when going from 2nd to 3rd, my first thoughts were dual mass flywheel. When I first noticed it at around 3000 miles I took it to my local dealer Audi Oxford where I took the workshop manager out in the car and he said yes there is definately a noise, book the car in for a days investigation, which I did. The car went in where they checked the oil levels, drove the car etc and said book it in for 3 days and we will order a new clutch & flywheel assy. I had to wait 3 weeks until they had a courtesy car for me, anyway the car went in, a week later I finally get to pick my car up. I'm informed that they have fitted a new clutch & flywheel and on road testing the car it still makes the same noise. They also road tested their accounts managers car which is the same spec as mine and it also makes the same noise. They said they would send a report to Audi UK and I would have to wait and see what they say, that was 6 weeks ago. I have rung the dealer twice now and they say there is still no feed back from Audi UK, so I rang Audi customer services this week. Basically they said the dealer is doing everything right by the system and until Audi UK get an answer back from the factory, they cannot inform the dealer of a suitable fix, if there is one. So my question to everyone with an A3 2.0 T fsi Quattro........does your car make a clunking/backlash noise when changing gear up through the box????????

I'm going to the dealer this week to ask if I can go out in their accounts managers car to hear the noise for my self (this is what Audi UK has told me to do)

When you disengage the clutch on most cars from the outside you can hear it.

Yes its not 150db of sound, but mechanically you can hear it.

4wd are a bit more vocal than 2wd. If you cannot hear this noise you probably don't know what your listening for. It is normal, unless its really loud.

I noticed excessive clunking / backlash noise on my 2.0Tfsi A3 quattro last night both on changing up and on downshifting (not there so much if done "gently"). However didn't seem as bad this morning anyway - which is why I havn't phoned Audi yet. Not sure whether quattro would affect it as the Haldex system won't have the rear wheels engaged most of the time anyway.
