engine fan running all of the time

My engine fan has started running all of the time. Not when you first start the engine but just a min or two after and then for the rest of the journey. It does not seem no be over heating and is driving fine. It’s just noisy and I am going away with the family next week so want to check that it’s not the beginning of a bigger problem. The temp gauge is always at 12 o'clock i.e. 90 degrees and I think always had been.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Just to check, you are talking about the electric fan and not the viscous coupled unit and if it is the electric it's not the half speed running that your refering to when the A/C is on?

If it is coming on that quickly then it's unlikely to be the engine heating up that quick.

Turn off the A/C and see if it stops (this will take about a minute). Worth checking will be the fan relay. This doesn't energise until the vehicle has been running for around a minute and it may well have decide to stick on. The fan relay is a standard heavy duty one, which you could exchange with another for testing purposes.

Finally are you sure it's not just Reliant Robin stuck under the engine tray. They have a similar power output to an Audi A8's cooling fan!

UPDATE:

The next day, on the way home from work the engine completely overheated and I only just managed to get home, with the Kids!! The next day we somehow packed the kids into the back of my wife’s TT crazy.gif and I took the car straight down to the Audi Independent about 10 mins away. After a quick look they suggested making other arrangements for my holiday gave me a car to get home in and said they would ring me. An hour later I received the call and it’s the water pump that has gone, this is going to be expensive and will require removal of the cam belt and from what I understand about half the engine!! fekr.gif

Anyway, the owner of the garage had rung the local stealer to get price and availability on parts and also discussed that my car had only done 55K miles and was only about 6 weeks out of the warranty. It was decided that if I rung the dealer then Audi may do a sympathetic warranty claim and if not pay for everything then put a percentage towards the cost. This would of course mean getting the job done at the stealer but Andy from VW Audi was happy for me to go there it if would save me money – which I think was bloody good of him as he could have been hungry for the business.

I rang the stealer and spoke to the service manager and explained all, he then rang Audi but within about 30 mins the answer came back as NO, we won’t do anything. fekr.gif So I asked how much they would charge for the job and explained that I was going away on the Holiday with the family on the Saturday (2 days time) and if there was a chance of a loan car. The answer including £120 to recover the car from about 6 miles away was around £1,100 (including cam belt replacement) and no loan car available. sportifs2.gif

I then got back in contact with the Indy and asked what his estimate of the job would be, the answer was around £720 so I told him to get on with it and that I would pick it up in a weeks time. I then had to hire a bloody Vauxhall Vectra diesel estate for 8 days at a cost of £335. I picked the car up on Monday, it ended up costing £900 and apparently took 1.5 days to do. So all in all that little over heating problem cost me £1,235 fekr.gif

The only good thing to come out of the whole tale was that I achieved over 40 mpg for the whole week and my A8 average is 18 mpg!! 169144-ok.gif

Hi, yes I am a bit miffed, the car has been serviced by Audi all of the time but different dealers. I wonder if its worth writing a letter to Audi UK, maybe ask the dealer what the referance number was when they rang to ask the question, this would also then prove that the dealer did actually ring I guess.
