littleBARON
Mk IV Golf 2.0 gti 40,000miles 2003 Had the EPC light flash up on my dash this morning on the way into work and as this happened about a year ago with the cause turning out to be the brake lights not working, it's the first thing I checked when I got to work. The lights aren't working and the light seems to be intermittent in display. When it happened last year I took it back to VW and they charged me £60 to fix it. It took them all of 90 seconds!! Was wondering if, as I knew what the problem was now, how easy is it to fix yourself? I really do not have a clue about cars other than driving them and putting petrol in them, so am at the mercy of the garages. As you can imagine I don't want to shell out 60 notes for a 90 second job again. Any help would be appreciated on this especially if it is something as easy as replacing a fuse (I'm sure I could do that!). Thanks in advance. littleBARON
Further to the above I found this post: [ QUOTE ] Had the same issue on my 1.8T (2000) and had to call the AA out!! He found that a switch under the brake pedal was at fault (seems to be a common problem). If you get under the brake pedal, the switch (not sure of exact name) should move up and down as the brake pedal is lifted or pressed. You can turn the switch so it pops free and pull the plug out for the wiring.. New switch costs around £10 and takes 2 minutes to fit! [/ QUOTE ] I have had a quick look under brake pedal and can't find anything that looks like a switch, so feeling a bit lost now! Might have to bite the bullet and cough up the £60 to VW.... Rustynuts
The brake switch is above the brake pedal. When you press the pedal down, the switch moves downwards, and when you release the brake pedal, it moves back up to rest and presses the switch back in. Wobby
VAG Com can show if this is working or not. I changed my switch because of VAG COM, i blamed it for my brake lights not working!! I went diving in with a new switch just to find later that the fuse had blown when i plugged a trailer in Find someone with VAG COM near to you, and check the fuses
littleBARON
Thanks for the replies. One of the fitters where I work had a look at it for me and told me the switch was definately knackered. Told me to pop down to VW and pick one up and he would fit it for me on his dinner break. All is hunky dory now, EPC light went out and it only ended up costing me £8 for the part and a score for the fitters trouble. He showed me where to find the switch, actually underneath a removable panel above the pedals, which you can only get to with torque(?) screwdrivers or ratchets. Saved me a few quid so I am well happy.
