Ground Clearance

I've currently got a Mk4 Golf GTI but am seriously considering buying the new Mk5 model.

Can anyone tell me whether the ground clearance on the new model is more than that of the old model.

I ask this because the only real problem I've had with my current car is that I've managed to crack the sump twice, and am paranoid now every time I drive over rough terrain.

All information gratefully received,

Tony

What sort of terrain are you driving it over? I would probably avoid anything rougher than a UK B road to be honest. It is a reasonable low car (especially at the front) and obviously not meant for off-road driving 169144-ok.gif

I was wodering about this when I was considering an R32 which might be lower than a GTi. So I road tested an R32 over all of the speed bumps in my area with no probs at all. Obviously you have to drop the speed right down. I have a mk IV gti and I have grounded it a couple of times but there do appear to be more bits sticking down.

Mk4 was well known for this problem. I also know first hand about it as we have a manhole cover that sticks up a large amount, the slope does not help either in our private back street and the mk4s catch it everytime you try and back into our drive or reverse out. The Mk5 GTI does not catch it though.
