jhibbin
Oh crap ! now I have to find £1700 from somewhere. I hate the OE brakes (its a personal thing but I really find them completely wooden) and these sound like they will make the next 18 months of GTi ownership so much more fun. RedRobin
I wasn't especially dissatisfied with the OEM brakes though I didn't like the pedal response. However, now I've got the AP Racing brakes I love them and have much more braking confidence. I wouldn't go back to the OEM brakes. Chungster
RedRobin / SiBurt, Did you both get your brakes "bedded in" by AP Racing themselves as they fitted it for you? I'm soo tempted to fit these as I intend to visit the Nurburgring and Spa-Franchorchamps next year.
RedRobin
I think that AP offer a pre-bedding service at extra cost but it's not strictly necessary. Best way is to bed them in on road (not track) use. Apply gently at low speed to ensure correct installation. Then apply brakes moderately and progressively. It's common sense really and the AP owner's handbook gives detailed advice. I haven't used mine on track but I have driven very enthusiastically on tight twisties etc on the road and the difference is quite stunning. I thought the OEM brakes were good but these are seriously good . It's the instant pedal response too that gives such confidence. On track the AP brakes would def potentially improve any lap times. Chungster
The bedding in procedure is crucial in ensuring the discs don't get warped. It's the one thing that concerns me when fitting their kits. I'll have to insist on getting them to bed it in for me if I do go for the kit. Having said that I have to say how well the OEM brakes are holding up so far. 6 months, 7k miles, 3 outings and no problems whatsoever!
RedRobin
Sorry, I may have inadvertently misled you, Lee - Bedding-in is crucial (as you say) but their offered service isn't essential if you bed them in sensibly. The OEM brakes are very, very good - But the AP ones are just a whole lot better! You need to experience them to appreciate the difference. Chungster
You've said enough to make me think about upgrading anyway. I'll have to go for the 6 pots if I did.

Snoopy
Heres a strainge question, How much are the pads for the AP kits calipers compared too say pad for the standard car?
Chungster
The 4 pot pads aren't too bad. The 6 pot ones are more expensive. However they should be longer lasting in my view.
RedRobin
Re 4-pot versus 6-pot: AP told me that for a car as 'light' as the Mk5 GTI, 6-pot wasn't worth the extra money unless perhaps you did a lot of track days. Ferodo DS2500 are the pads AP use and recommend.
Chungster
It's not that light when you think the Scooby boys prefer the 6pots to haul down their 1500kg and the Golf is only 200kgs less. Besides....you can never have too much braking power and also the 6 pots look wicked
RRR250
....Carbonio Cold Air Intake - See thread: HERE Improves torque and efficiency of air in and exhaust gases out. My VW dealer was happy to fit it so my VW warranty was still protected. Neuspeed solution would effect warranty cos of change of engine cover. I see no point doing it unless you have a performance exhaust. [/ QUOTE ] Looks a sex bit of kit, do you mind me asking how much? I need to replace the rear breaks soon do you no if AP do OE replacments but with the same 7 groovs?
RedRobin
Carbonio cost £165 from AwesomeGTI (very helpful company) and my VW dealer charged me 1 hour labour. Rear brakes? - Braking is 85/90% through the front brakes. Changing rear brakes to aftermarket would involve all sorts of tricky handbrake jiggery-pokery. Plus I doubt very much if AP will supply only parts to fit with other manufacturer's parts - I would be concerned about how the result would work! Another real-world consideration is that if you puncture and all four corners are bigger brake discs, the GTI spare wheel won't fit any corner. At least with just fronts, you can transfer wheels around to fit if you get a front puncture - More work but you're not absolutely stuck.
RRR250
Just mean standard discs but uprated groved replacements.mostly for cosmetic reasons so they match the front. Had a look at Awesome's web site. There selling alot of iteresting pipe work and the pulleys look good. Do you no if the Carbonio will mess up the re map? RRR250
Hi RRR Welcome to TSN Glad you like the the Morego 250 and AP Brakes. There pretty much top of my shopping list when my Gti's arrives and is run in. BTW. Did you go for the Powergrip suspension kit? If so what are your thoughts... [/ QUOTE ] Yes had the powergrip fitted with the 250 and in the dry traction and uderstear is vastly improved. Need new tyres so can't tell in the wet at the mo. Morego use there demo car on track and are happy with the set up to the point they don't change shock or springs. Standard ride hight all helps with the illusion. Have you gone for manual or DSG?
