I've got a stupid question: What is detailing? Is it just a posh word for cleaning?

[/ QUOTE ]

basically, yes. It's cleaning with OCD (obsesive copulsive disorder) they wash the car, inspect the paint for swirls, light scratches etc and treat accordingly with clay bars, fillers etc then apply polishes, sealants. It's mostly buffed with a rotary polisher. The car, when finished, looks like it's been polished to within an inch of it's life. I'm having mine done next week. I'll be posting before and after pics 169144-ok.gif

I'm in scotland. A guy in dundee is detailing it. I'm up for washing and polishing as much as the next man but i thought i'd have the car done by an expert as i've got swirl marks all over the car, apparently they are caused by poor washing techniques i.e sponges, auto car washes and such like. It's all a bit anal.......but i luuuuuuuve my car. 123576-assfeck.gif

I'm sure this has been dealt with in the 'cleaning' forum but what is a clay bar and how does it work? What's the difference between clay bars and, say, Autoglym's Super Resin polish? I've got to get all these stupid questions off my chest.

[/ QUOTE ]

A clay bar (like the Sonus ones) will remove all of the film and tar from the car. It's basically a small block of clay that you mould and run over a wet car. When you look at the bar, you'll see all of the dirt that you're taking off even though the car has been cleaned!

The polish is merely that, it gives the car a layer of polish to protect the paint work. You'll get better results if you clay the car first as it'll remove all of the grime normal washing doesn't remove.

Plus if you wax an un-clayed car, you'll be sealing all the grime under the wax....urrgg UHOH7.GIF

Speaking of dealers, i will be asking my dealer Not to wash my car whenever it needs to go in for servicing. I don't want a monkey with a bottle of fairy liquid and a sponge that looks as though it came out of the ark, near my car slap.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Good idea, mine went in to a stealer for Haldex service before Chrimbo and whilst it went in filthy, it came back clean but covered in fine swirl marks so they must have washed it with a cruddy sponge openfire.gif Mind you it makes me glad I thraped the nuts off the Touran they lent me, and returned it absolutely pigging filthy with 5 miles of diesel leftcool.gif

Well, for starters i need the know how to remove the swirls. Any muppet can wash and wax, including me! Detailing a car is expensive because of the time and price of materials, i believe the guy in dundee is sh!t hot because i've seen his work. Why don't you check out his work on the detailing world forum? his name is Dave KG.

Having said all that, do you know how to remove swirls, because i'm all ears? coffee.gif

So that brings me to silly question number 2, is there an acronym for the other colours? eg is mine RSM for Reflex Silver metalic? ;-)

[/ QUOTE ]

DBP - deep blue pearl

BMP - black magic pearl

RS - reflex silver

TR - Tornado Red

as used over on Vortex where they have taken to giving blokes names to the VW wheels (it started as a joke aimed at someone but seems to have stuck)!

tspar, if you have a got a polishing machine (e.g. Porter Cable) and a nice collection of cutting polishes and you know what you’re doing then I agree it’s easy.

If not It s worth paying, it’s really a once of payment, keeping the car looking good is easy when the swirls have been removed.

The quality detaining guys do some superb work and they are very professional and proud of their work, they also tend to love cars, just the sort of people I like to look after my cars. It’s a shame VW dealers don’t have the same attitude.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a silly question:

How do you change the language on the MFA? My car talks to me in German so I get "Bitte Tanken" when the fuel runs low.. smile.gif My manual is in French which I could figure out eventually but if someone on here knows a quick way to fix it that'll be great.

(I don't have a dodgy car, I live in French-speaking Switzerland..)

Aye, the guys in dundee did a fantastic job of the car last week, unfortunately i've not managed to take any pics yet due to the relentless fecking rain in scotland. They (Dave KG and Bryan) did however, pics of the polishing process on my car and the end results are available over on detailing world under the heading 'r32 meets swissvax'
