Cleybrooke
Had a long chat with Goodyear techs and they have stated that the Asymetrics are not out in the UK yet for 17's or 18's. They are manfactured in Germany which where some grey imports could be coming from. He did reccomend Fulda EXELERO as this was developed after the F1 asymetric and is from the same company
steve_h
Yup, I've got a set on the rear of mine, 225x80/18, sourced from mytyres. About £106 per tyre IIRC. i have noticed though that the ride is slightly worse. I called dunlop/goodyear about it and they said that the sidewall is stiffer on the inside to stop flexing during hard cornering, so that the contact patch doesnt defor. I guess it's the old performance/ride/life compromise. I have GSD'3 on the front and you can definately feel the front flexing more that the rear. StokeGTi
Just had my 2 front tyres replaced. They were Continental Sport Contact 2 & I went for a direct replacement (actually Sport Contact2 XL) as the rears are OK & I didn't want to mix and match. Got the tyres through Blackcircles.com at £224.38 for the 2 including fitting & balancing. Had them fitted today at Central Tyre in Hanley who were great. Quick & no damage to the alloys when fitting. Would recommend them & blackcircles. I'm on 17" Monzas & the fronts had done 17342 miles & were down to about 2mm. Bit embarrased really;obviously not driving hard enough!
Scarlet_Pimp
I used "Event Mobile Tyres" 08702 407 787 and they sourced my 17" F1 Asymetrics. Their stock code is: GO22545Y17F1ASYM Cost per tyre was £72.67 (exclud VAT, £88.08 with VAT) and that included fitting at my place of work. Extra cost on top of the above was £1.76 per valve, £3.78 for balancing per wheel and 64p for tyre disposal. So total cost of a full set, with fitting cost me £371 (including VAT). Service was very good too, only quibble was the chappy didn't clean the grease off my alloys)
robe
My car came supplied with Conti's. Just changed all 4, didn't get a choice unfortunately (company car) in terms of brand; now have Dunlop Sport Maxxx. Feels like my tyres have been replaced by lumps of concrete. More noise, harsher ride, less grip. Will definitely be putting pressure on next time to get something better than these.
mikemod
Just about to get four new tyres next week. Going through ELSA I noticed the following statement about the Monza II alloys. [ QUOTE ] As of model year 2005, hollow chamber wheels have been installed in certain equipment variants. These hollow chamber wheels are fitted with metal valves instead of the usual rubber valves. Metal valves must be renewed completely each time a tyre is changed. [/ QUOTE ] Just wanting to know if other people have had the valves replaced as I would need to get them ordered before going to the tyre fitters. Chungster
Just replaced all mine with Eagle F1 GSD3s for £422 from Elite in Rainham. 15k very enthusiastic miles on original SportContis. Oh...have you all heard about the "Made in Thailand" batch of dodgy Eagle F1s?

mikemod
Just got four Michelin PS2's fitted, will report back when I get them run in. The Goodyear F1 GS-D3's are discontinued as manufacturers move to asymmetric profiles. Got all four valves replaced on the Monza IIs as recommended by VW. They were about £4 each. petsy
did you get the valves from your VW dealer?
TwoSheds
...my OEM GTI metal valves (1KO601361) were £11.09 each.
mikemod
That's the same part number as mine, the dealer actually gave them to me as I was getting two Monza IIs replaced at the same time. I didn't realise the price..
TwoSheds
....You should have asked them for a few spares then.
mikemod
After I had put the Michelin Sports on I was just checking their web site when I noticed the recommended pressure for normal load is 29psi whereas VW recommend 35psi, 6psi of a difference So I emailed Michelin for thier advice and got a reply as follows [ QUOTE ] Thank you for your recent e-mail. We would advise that for your Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk V on Pilot Sports tyre size 225/40 ZR 18 92Y, the recommended tyre pressures are as follows:- Standard Front Pressure – 29 psi (pounds per square inch) Standard Rear Pressure – 29 psi (pounds per square inch) Laden Front Pressure – 33 psi (pounds per square inch) Laden Rear Pressure – 40 psi (pounds per square inch) You would be advised to follow values indicated on the fuel cap / door-pillar / vehicle handbook in relation to the tyre size fitted – specifications can change without our knowledge. [/ QUOTE ] So no further on really, I always ran 35psi in the Continentals as that was what was on the fuel flap.
zippytwo
Okay - this video link to the latest Autocar tyre test may help matters. Seems the new Goodyears really are the best choice. My Bridgestones will be replaced in the next few days after nearly 17.5k - not bad really - though they have most definitely "gone off" over the last 2k or so. The rears have got loads left. Perhaps I should have swapped them over half way because I feel I should stick with the Bridgestones all round. Next time the Goodyears will get a go! web page
gribs
According to my local tyre dealer, Goodyear Aysemmtrics in 18" (possibly 17" too), are still not available to them yet. So I'm getting a couple of GSD3s instead at the weekend.
robe
Autocar tyre test in this weeks edition. Same result as the EVO test in that the Goodyear Assymetrics win. Must be good then
Cleybrooke
I have the Goodyear EAGLE F1 Asymmetric 225/40 R18 92Y XL on mine. Having read all of the reviews I was expecting them to completly out perform the conti's I had fitted. But my perception is that they do not stick to the road as well. The traction light seems to come on a little bit more often and around my favorite island there is, I'm sure, a bit more movement going on at the tail (which I suppose is no bad thing!) Is this just me? Gribs - you can buy them at http://www.mytyres.co.uk for £109 a corner.
gribs
Thanks JamesH. I did look at mytyres but the nearest fitter is 20 miles away. I trust my local fitter with my 18"s so I'll stick with what's booked in and maybe go for the asymmetrics next time round. Cheers.
Tunner
Goodyear Asymmetric, I have them fitted to the front and having driven on them for 1000 miles, they are no better than the Pilots in fact, they are rather noisy! Road noise has increased, more of a rumbling. F1 GSD's are still my tyre of choice, I wish I had stuck to my original plan. I have GSD's on the rear and when I replaced the Pilot's on this axle, the road noise went down and grip was improved. I am going to swap axle's with them to get the GSD's on the front and lust at the lovely tread pattern!
bugsymania
Hi Everyone, Hopefully someone can help me out. I'm planning to replace my fronts with continental sport contact 2 bought from tyre-shopper.co.uk and fitted by National Tyres in Huddersfield. Has anyone had any experience with either of these? I have 18" Monza II's with the metal valves. Am I best providing these myself, or hope that National have them? tyre-shopper say their price includes valves. petsy
IMO you should get the valves yourself from your vw dealer.
