johnnysenna
Fellas, I was wondering if anyone knows how to turn off the permanently on daytime driving lights on my dutch import Mk5 GTI please. I think this is stopping my Pioneer sat nav from doing auto-dim when I turn my lights on at night. Any ideas? Red Robin, do you know please? Thanks, John
Oli
I think that you can do this using VAGCOM
petsy
sounds like the Dutch have DRL permanently enabled in which case you'll need someone with a vag-com to change it's present setting.
jd6677
Yeah you will need some one with VAGCOM to disable the DRL's. You need to make one change in Central Electronics in Byte Zero under Long Coding. JD
johnnysenna
Thanks fellas. What's VAGCOM? Do I need to go to the local dealer to ask them to do it?
RedRobin
Yes, the Pioneer automatically switches its display to 'night mode' according to the car's exterior lights, but to only one level. I used to think it was quite clever but the Alpine's system of automatically dimming the display according to natural light level sensors is far better. If you've got a good VW dealer, they should be willing to help you. Otherwise a friendly TSN VIAGRACONDOM expert will doubtless help. Out of interest which lights are deemed to be the daytime driving light?
johnnysenna
I'm not sure RedRobin, I would have to check, but I think they are the dipped headlights rather than side lights, but I will check. Do you think that if I get the daytime driving light function to switch off, the Pioneer will dim as it supposed to?
petsy
yes, DRLs are the dipped headlights. your head unit should work as expected if your drl is disabled.

Snoopy
As others have said find someone with the VAGCOM program + lead for there labtop and im sure they will sort it for you. I also remember this been asked a few times in the past on here maybe you can findout the exact way others sorted it before.

silentandy
Can you lower the level of xenons on there too?
mikemod
To lower the Xenons just use the white adjustment screws on the back of the headlight units. This was the advice given to me from my dealer. Carried it out myself and it worked a treat.
petsy
[ QUOTE ] Can you lower the level of xenons on there too? [/ QUOTE ] good question but the answer I believe is (afaik) no.
rs32
you can reset the auto-calibration level on the xenons through VAGCom as long as there are no faults logged. If there are faults, clear them and the lights will then reset
silentandy
So even if I took it to the dealers that would only adjust them using the manual adjusters and no computer trickery?

[/ QUOTE ] Andy, out of curiousity, are you having this problem with your xenons after your suspension mod?
silentandy
No, I've been blinding people ever since I've had it. Not as bad as my first GTI mind you! Actually, the suspension mods have improved it a little but I still think they might be a bit high but not really sure what level they should be at. petsy
hmm, I seem to recall the dealer has to manually lower the beam then use the vagcom to reset the stored "level" setting. has the dealer been useless?
mikemod
On the MKV golf the Xenons calibrate every time you switch the car on so VAG-COM is not required like it was on the MKIV.
rs32
mikemod - when I had my ARBs fitted to the R32 it needed a VAGCom recalibration - the "switch on" level adjust does not completely reset the level, it just seems to go from its previously stored "base". my xenons went down 2 inches on the facing object 10 feet away as soon as the VAGCom adjust was triggered. Snoopy
Mikemod Its still needed on the mk5 if the reference level was wrong from the factory to start with and thats VERY common.
mikemod
I adjusted mine using the mechanical adjusters on the back of the light units. I just lowered it a couple of turns and it has stayed that way. I assumed that the when you switch the ignition on and the lights lower and then raise again that this was them finding their centre point. When I attached VAGCOM and went into the Xenon channel it did a similar thing and the level I had set stayed. Even when I adjusted the lights again without VAGCOM the adjustment was permanent. I just assumed then that VAGCOM was not required. but it looks like I may be wrong
