Multitronic oil change

Hi,

My father-in-laws 2001 2.0 petrol A4 with multitronic gearbox is coming up for its 40K service, and as far as i understand needs the gearbox oil changed. I am servicing his car but have read all kinds of horror stories about requiring special oils, extensive draining / refilling kit, temperature control etc etc on this type of box. Can anyone advise if this is possible for a competent DIY mechanic or whether it really is a dealer only job? Any guides and fluid advice would be more than welcome confused.gif

TIA

Hi, I have a 2.0 FSI A4 with a multitronic box. I think there are two issues here;

The first is purely technical; my understanding is that there is no way to check the level of the fluid in the multitronic box. To ensure that the box is filled with the correct amount the only way is to ensure the oil is warmed to a specific temperature, drain it and than ensure you replace exactly the same amount. The oil itself has to be of a very precise specification.

The second issue is one of liability in the event of subsequent problems with the box. Although somewhat chequered, Audi do have some history of assisting financially in the event of multitronic gearbox failures - but ONLY if the ATF was changed every 40,000 miles. My guess would be that it would be easier to press your case if the change was done by one of their dealers.

By way of comparison, I had mine done at a dealer and it came to just over £150. To me, that is a small price to pay for some peace of mind when I have heard that replacement boxes can cost about £4K.

Can't advise on the procedure I'm afraid; I'm truely rubbish at anything mechanical :-)

As above, take it to a dealer. That will ensure guarantees should there be any issues in the future. The procedure is relatively straight forward for replacing the oil, but you do need some special tools i.e. gearbox drain plug socket, oil filling resivior and vag-com. If you have all these ill talk you thru it, but save yourself the agro and take it to an Audi dealer.
