New to this forum – hello all!

Been browsing for a few weeks now - very informative and entertaining forum - so here I am with a problem!

My car was in for service yesterday and I was shocked to be told that the front tyres had worn down to the cord on the inside edges. (tread across the full width of the tyre was well above the wear bars) I Was told that the geometry was out – why? – potholes, hard driving etc.

Car has air suspension and all the bits, 255.35 ZR 19 Pilot Sports, 18,000miles

Any views/advice?

Welcome!

It may not be out. An S4 would be the same after less miles than that. Remember that you have little profile on those tyres and with the cord showing your insurer might not pay out in an accident.

FWIW I replace my S4 tyres (all round) at 12k miles. Better safe than sorry.

Hope you are enjoying your car - its probably pretty quick?

Thanks for the response.

Agree with your comments without question - tyres being fitted 1st thing tomorrow - 4 wheel alignment arranged.

However - until the garage inspected the car I was sure that the tyres were fine - will obvioulsy get my head under further next time.

I do not have a problem with replacing the tyres - my previous A6 did a set of tyres on average every 10k (2.7TT plus K04s plus all the bits) - I just do not expect the tyres to wear as they did - without sign - frightening(for the reason that you mention, plus a few others that I can think of)!

Yes I am enjoying the car - regarding quick - QST and MTM have added to the standard.

You do seem to have to watch inner edge tyre wear on S4's and the heavier engined quattro A6's. My S4 is on it's third new set of fronts in the 30K miles I've done in it - it normally wears the inside edges down to the cords in 12K regardless of having the 4WD alingment done. A colleagues A6 3.0TDi S-Line is also having similar problems.

Yes a bit of a wake up call.

They looked fine even with full lock on - it was only when you actually get down to have a really good look a run you hand up on the side wall that you realise you have a problem.

I would suspect that there are a few others out there driving around not aware of the problem – as I was.

I thought 18,000 miles for front tyres was pretty good but I suspect it will end up a lot less in future.

Strange really, my business partner has a Phaeton - same engine - just replaced his front tyres at a similar mileage - they had worn evenly across the tread. So 4wd may not necessarily be the culprit.

Car off road at the moment – too risky to drive – until tyres fitted – supplier ordered a pair which did not have the correct load rating – hopefully today will sort it.

It is worth asking about the tread-wear rating as well.

Many people are ignorant of its meaning but it can be useful guide.

Basically, the higher the number the better. Anything above 260-280 is good and below 250 should be avoided.

I have a set of Dunlop Sport 01's - 235/40/18 which are a 95y load rating and 280 tread-wear.

the tread is not just related to compound but desing as well. A desing which 'grabs' at the road surface as the tyre compresses will wear more rapidly and create more friction then a design which is uses the shape of the tread pattern to create grip.

Some very interesting info there. 169144-ok.gif

hmm - I think I will stop at the load rating.

Anyway I've had the wheel alignment checks done and £230 later the front wheels are 7 and 12 minutes out - adjusted to the correct alignment - rear wheel alignment is OK.

Something also about adjustment to the active cruise control.

So all back as it should be.
