Decked
Can someone tell me if I need any security software on Vista Ultimate? I know it has built in software but is it enough? Should I get something like Norton Internet security, antivirus etc? I don't want trojens and popups killing my new machine. Thanks
CarMad
I would have thought getting seperate AV adn Firewall software was a good move. Zonealarm for the Firewall and AVG is a good Anti Virus product. Both are free to use for personal non commercial use.
Sparky
Noooooooo, nor ZoneAlarm! It's more pants than a pants factory. Seriously - it's naff. I still think a router/hardware based firewall is better anyhoo.
CarMad
Why is it pants. The full on product isn't the best, but the Firewall only part has won review after review. Never had a single problem on mine or 20+ other machines I've installed it onto. In fact my co uses it on all the corporate laptops. Hardware firewalls are fine for not letting most things in but not very good at stopping things leaving your machine. If you do get a dodgy program onto your machine you might not know its sending anything until its too later.
Decked
Cheers for your thoughts, (I've only ever used Symantec products and i'm quite happy with them) I couldn't originally find Internet Security from Symantec but I have found a beta product of Norton 360 so I guess it will be released soon and will be required, so until then I will have to wait until it's released or use the beta. CarMad
Norton doesn't have a good reputation anymore. It used to in the past but recently things have been slipping big time. Norton can often be at the centre of many problems not the fix. Let us know how you get on.
techieboy
I've never had any issues with ZoneAlarm either and with the exception of my laptop, all of the machines here run it. [ QUOTE ] Why is it pants? [/ QUOTE ] Coz it doesn't run on Vista yet. I'm running Ultimate on a couple of PC's at home and am just using the built-in stuff at the moment but it's behind a router/firewall anyway. techieboy
[ QUOTE ] Norton doesn't have a good reputation anymore. [/ QUOTE ] I was out for dinner with a Symantec guy in Hamburg a couple of weeks ago and he had nothing good to say about there suites at the moment. His exact quote was "no-fecking-where near my machine".
Decked
Ok, how about Mcafee? Any thoughts on that? I do know of users that haven't got on with Norton and moved to McAfee. They seem to have an update for Vista.... For some reason I'd rather pay for security than donload freeware
CarMad
I bit the same for Mcafee. They have both become rather bloated and slow and sloppy in the way they have been designed. The options I gave first time round are IMO first class solutions. If its not for business use I wouldn't spend a penny its really not worth it. No idea why Sparky has issues with Zonealarms. He gets confused sometimes bless him.
techieboy
Long time since I used a Macafee product. I think I stopped as soon as they started going the same way as Symantec (bundling everything up in massive suites, most of which you don't need and just end up fighting each other for control and resources). The only add on I'm using in Ultimate is anti-virus, Eset NOD32 (which is excellent, by the way) and the bundled/integrated Windows Defender for the anti-spyware stuff. I'll probably not bother with a dedicated firewall product until I install it on a laptop that will be roaming around various coffee bars.
Sparky
[ QUOTE ] No idea why Sparky has issues with Zonealarms. [/ QUOTE ] I'm referring to the free ZoneAlarm, but can't see how the paid-for version will differ. It's pants as it's resource hungry, and buggy. It's been discussed quite a few times on TSN. It makes me laugh when you go to remove it and one of the selections in the "why are you removing it?" is asking if it crashes or has poor performance. It runs on some people's computers with no problems I'll admit, but the headcount here says to avoid it.
Decked
hummm, interesting, I may have to do a bit more reading up but I appreciatate all your comments. I'll have a look at Zonealarm and Eset NOd32 and see what I come up with. Thanks

[/ QUOTE ] Nope disagree with Mcafee comments, I have had nothing but solid performance from Mcafee and A1 support over the last 3 years (4 SBS servers, 60 XP machines, 3 Vista Ultimate machines). If you put Mcafee in Vista you need Version 8.5.0i. Zone alarm?? I can't even be a**ed to waste my breath.

Waylander
This thread is treading down the road of our usual prejudices! Pity as I would like to know what is and isn't Vista Compliant yet and what is actually needed Firewall and AV-wise. I used to be a Norton fanboy but I made the switch to Nod32 and have never looked back It is superb and made a huge impact on performance on not only my sister's old lappy but my own machine too. ZAPro - I have stuck with version 5.5 as the newer ones have well-publicised spack-attacks [see the Zone Labs forums] I hate Macafee as it is even more bloated than Symantec and trashed a mate's machine - n=1 I know, but still... Thanks [/ QUOTE ] It's a bit of a dud question at the moment, as M$ in their infinite wisdom, locked many AV and firewall vendors right out, so pretty much no 3rd party stuff runs on Vista. They did the same to the CD/DVD software crowd too (Nero is the most publicly broken application). I'd actually hold off on any Vista upgrades or installs till around the end of March, as that seems to be the timeframe that a few of the 3rd party software folks hope to have Vista versions of their software ready to rock and roll.
