Tail light keeps blowing

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know if there is an issue with rear lights on Mk4 Golfs blowing regularly?

I keep having to replace the nearside lamp every 6 months which is far too often for my liking.

As a footnote, I drove from my work to the garage last night to get some diesel, probably about 2 miles with my lights on (remember that the light has already blown) and removed the bulb to check what type it was and it was hot to touch!! even though it wasn't on!! I assume this means that there is some sort of faulty electrical connection going on here or could it be something else?

Any help would be greatly received, sorry about the rambling......its just a pain in the arse to have to keep replacing it and I also got pulled last night by mr plod because of it.....rambling again......

I have the same problem with my 2001 Golf MkIV GTTDI. It seems like Im always changing them. However, it may be down to the quality of the bulb. I usually dash into the local petrol station and buy cheapy "Ring" type. I'm going to try a better type in future and see if they last longer.

I looked into this a bit further and it seems to some of the technical bods where I work that the bulb is 'over voltage' because instead of the filment just burning out, the inside of the glass has gone completely silver and if you look carefully is actually glowing a tiny bit when illuminated.

This is a symptom of over voltage apparently but I haven't had the chance to get my multimeter out yet.
