MkV GTI Perceived Performance Problem??

No Tesco contaminated petrol?

Next alternative is to have the learn't throttle system reset. Often this reverts throttle performance to stock, which may be more familiar.... irrespective of underlying engine function.

Had someone else driven the car and this led to change in throttle responsiveness?

I don't know if this really works but you can turn on the ignition on the car without starting it.

next, fully depress the accelerator pedal to the floor and hold it for about ten seconds ( iirc you get a beep).

start the car and drive away...

I've also "felt" there's a problem with my new 07 GTI especially in 2nd/3rd/4th gears under full throttle. I've put it down to the engine not being loosened up yet (currently only done 500 miles), but I'm sceptical that the performance will improve that much. The 50-70mph time in 4th took about 10 secs rather than 5secs in the mags! My old MINI Cooper S felt a lot torquier and you're talking 30 less lb ft of pull at their peak.

Have you tried timing 30-50 or 50-70mph in-gear times? A few of the recent car mag reviews suggest something like:

3.3s 30-50 in 3rd

4.5s 30-50 in 4th

3.7s 50-70 in 3rd

4.8s 50-70 in 4th

Some of these should overlap with the rev range you mention where there may be problems.

The other curious thing I've noticed is a spurt in pulling power every 2000 revs through the rev range as if the turbo is disengaging then re-ingaging. Might be nothing but wondered if this is a characteristic of the GTI?

OUCH!

I'm old fashioned enough to believe that a proper running-in regime is very important for an engine and pays dividends in the way that it will eventually perform and how long it lasts.

A careful run-in regime has a major effect on the surface finish of bearings, journals, cylinder bores, rings and camshafts and I can back this with lots of experience over the years of carefully building engines that got the "motor over/bench run/drive-run-in/strip-and-inspect" procedure. Using a very strict load/speed buildup over at least a couple of thousand miles showed visual and measurable improvements in the engines when they were stripped and inspected. By contrast, ones that had an hour's bench run and got raced straight off *never* performed or lasted as well (Except the Climax FWA, but that's another story!)

If you want the best performance, be patient. If you've thrashed it from zero miles, you're gonna get the car you deserve!

I'm not talking about thrashing the hind legs off it all the time, but when I've occasionally put my foot down when the engine's nicely warmed up there's not been much ooomph throughout the rev range.

If you look at the Autocar road tests, virtually all of them are done when the odometer reads approx. 1000 miles and I'm rather doubting the engine's going to loosen up that much in the next 500 miles to be on a par with the performance times quoted in their GTI!
